For those musically inclined, or have children who are....

How early did you start them? Piano first?

My daughter is turning 7 soon, and she likes to play on her keyboard. She picks up stuff about as quick as I can teach her. We are "one handed" and I learn from youtube for now. I do not know music, can't read it, can barely play the guitar but everything is self taught or from an old friend.

She is the type of kid who wants to do 'everything.' She does dance twice a week, soccer twice a week, so getting real lessons is another expense, but more importantly, another commitment. I have told her she has outgrown her first teacher and she needs a real one, and she is OK with that.

She does get frustrated when things don't come easily to her (take her recent dealings with a new yo-yo...) If she wants to do it, however, she will. She was tying shoes at the age of 3.5 because she insisted on it. Every guest in our house left with neatly tied shoes at that time.

Is she ready for music? Best way to find a teacher just asking around?

I would say she is old enough. Do you think she'll practice? I think you may need to get a real piano, I don't think a keyboard will do. The good thing about pianos is that there are plenty around for free.

Yes, she will practice I do believe.

A piano? I'll need a bigger house first. :hair: We aren't getting a piano, sorry Jack!

We started ours on piano in kindergarten. Oldest has taken up guitar too. My wife is in charge of all that. I couldn't play a song or paint a picture if my life depended on it.

My daughter's we're 10 and 8 when they started. The 10yo on violin and the 8yo on piano. They both chose the instrument they wanted to try. They were enthusiastic for about a year and made some progress but competitive swimming took over at 11 and 9 years old. It took every extra minute of every day. I sometimes wondered; if we had started them earlier, might they have been far enough along and not been drawn into the swimming so intensely?

I started piano at 7 iirc. I played it for 8 or so years then picked up guitar and still played piano too. Piano and developing an ear for music made learning guitar a breeze for me. I say let her try it.

I will expose my lil one to all I can and see what she is into though she has less options than I did as a kid. If yours is into all kinds and grasps it quickly, I would try all of it and see what she runs with.

Is she ready for music? I think the best time to learn is when they have an interest in it. Methinks she is ready.
