This hasn't been publicized too much but wanted to let everyone know. Kidde has a major recall on most all of their fire extinguishers. Ones effected were made between 1973 to 2017. The ones with the plastic handles. You can go to their website and plug in your numbers as you don't need a receipt. If it falls into the recall the SEND you a replace in 10 - 15 days. I had 3 and went through the process and it was easy. We all should have them in our vehicles so check to see if you can get a new replacement.

Kevin in Ohio thanks for the info!
I now have 4 replacements coming

The website application is a pain to complete. Tough to get it to accept serial #.
Worked on 2 of the extinguishers. Called the number listed and it was much easier.
    Got the first replacement yesterday

I am responsible for extinguishers at work. Only found one that was recalled, so I repurposed it.

Grizzly Adam i was thinking of cutting top off and making giant wind chimes out if them.
Question after you relived the pressure by squirting extinguisher
Did you just unscrew top or just cut it?

The replacement extinguisher came with a shipping label and a note to ship it back.
I guess I could still keep it. But don't know

I used an abbrasive cutter to chop it. Also, on a side note, the extinguisher worked fine when I discharged it.

    Thanks for the info
The cheap side of me says to keep the old ones and use them as well as the replacements
Bet they would all work fine
But I'd like to try and make something out of them also
Will use grinder with cutoff wheel or bandsaw to cut
    Thanks

I have a couple of Kidde extinguishers that I have set aside for future disposal. I would never use those at work. I have over 100 extinguishers in my workplace and they are all Badger or Amerex #10 ABC units. Monthly checks and annual service.

Summary: This product recall involves two styles of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers:

    • Plastic handle fire extinguishers
    • Plastic push-button fire extinguishers
This Recall does not include Kidde Professional or Badger branded fire extinguishers. Units with metal handles/valve assemblies are not included in the recall.

    Follow These Steps:

    1. View the following links to determine if you have an affected model:

    • Plastic handle fire extinguishers: Open to view the Fire Extinguisher ID Guide (Opens in new browser window)

    • Push-Button Fire Extinguishers: Open to view the Fire Extinguisher ID Guide (Opens in new browser window)

    2. If you believe that you may have an affected model, before continuing, also use the Fire Extinguisher ID Guide (link above) to locate and collect your Model Number, Serial Number, and Date Code (if applicable). The Date Code is a 10-digit number printed on the side of your fire extinguisher, near the bottom. Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture, and these five numbers are what you will need to proceed.

    3. When you are ready to proceed, select your unit from the list below. Note: If you have a push button model used on a personal watercraft such as a JET SKI®, be sure to select the personal watercraft option.

    Yep, That's what it says.

"Plastic handle fire extinguishers: The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated. The model number is printed on the fire extinguisher label. For units produced in 2007 and beyond, the date of manufacture is a 10-digit date code printed on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom. Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled models manufactured from January 2, 2012 through August 15, 2017 are 00212 through 22717. For units produced before 2007, a date code is not printed on the fire extinguisher."

Yeah, it does say that—Just seems very strange that a 44 year old product would be eligible for recall or still in use. I was just wondering if they made a typo.

I think it's safe to say there were lawyers involved and they were mandated to do so. Incredible cost involved and I'm surprised they could stay afloat.
