Another thing they are good for is during he fall, many times it can be a problem getting a draft started in the chimney, especially if the outside air is wet. To take care of a possible problem I simply light a SS or a half of one and have it centered in the stove. I've never had that fail but have a couple times had smoke in the house when I didn't use one. Danged smoke will come right out through the draft holes. It has to go somewhere.
Thanks for the heads up Locust Post. I'll have to check my inventory. Last year I bought a large quanity and I usually only use a half of one or just a quarter.
