Was out back cleaning up before the rain/snow that’s supposed to come tonight into tomorrow. I heard tree guys cutting at a neighbors house and went to look. Couple of oaks coming down. Red oak at least 30” and an 18” white oak. Waved to the guys and when he shut the saw off told him I would take the wood chips and wood if he wanted to get rid of them.
When I drove to the house, I had some second thoughts. The BIG red sections were all piled up in the street and were all 3 or 4 ft. long. I asked the guy if he could just cut the big ones into smaller rounds. They had a bobcat to load the truck and he said he would load it as it was cut but cut it All after they dumped it at my house. They would even bring the bobcat to help.
So they dumped a full load of chips and dumped and cut up not only the big rounds but everything else. I
told him I could use a few more loads of wood but many more loads of chips if the wood was good. He said if he was in area and had good wood and chips he’d call.

    What a surprise.

But wait there is more. I just finished spreading the wood chips out and shut the tractor off. When I looked up there were two more and different trucks waiting behind me. It was the crew that brought the sweet gum and chips the day before.
First truck was loaded with chips, second bigger truck had oak and some maple in it all cut up into 16”-18” rounds.
One round even came with a plant hanger

Looks like 3-4 cord of oak. Ridiculous score. Well done.

That would NEVER happen where I live. You want a load of logs? $900 please. You are a lucky man!

Thanks for that my very first and will treasure it!
I’m a good 5 years ahead, retired and truly enjoy working with wood. Will be 70 next year and am slowing down a little. Those big rounds, which I love can really kick my butt now. I always start with the worst one to get it over with. That’s why I was thinking I might have made a mistake when I saw the big ones in the road. Thank goodness for my little tractor.

There might be more tomorrow if it doesn’t rain and snow

    Midwinter funny you said that.
I butt dialed my brother who lives north of Albany, NY didn’t hear his return call ,while I was running around today and when I finally spoke to him later he told me he wanted to get 2 log loads and instead of $900 each it would be $1600 for both.
Down here the tree guys have to pay to dump the wood and the chips and are always looking to get rid of both. Especially the chips. That’s my hook to get good wood from them. I’ll take 3 loads of chips as long as I get a good load of wood with it. If they don’t play ball I don’t deal with them.

I signed up for Chipdrop, for logs only, but I don't think it's active in NH, just MA. You are sitting pretty in your area. I can't believe they even bucked it up for you. And lined up in the road to gift you with chips and wood!

Look at it like this; at least you are still out there doing it! Do you know how many folks our age, 66 to 70, are unable to do 1/4 of what you do! Keep at it, it keeps you young, body and mind!:salute:

If you look at Craig’s list or FB marketplace for long island NY you would see how common it is around here for a tree service to leave bucked up logs curbside. Free for the taking. Every day all year long. They charge to take wood away.
It’s a little harder to get it bucked and delivered to your yard. I’ve also taken dump truck loads of log length for free.

the pics below are from time of hurricane Sandy 2012. The spot where the red truck is dumping is the exact spot the second load today was dumped. Beautiful clear grained red oak. No crotches or branches. Split and covered and still waiting to be burned.

You are so right. I often see people in the stores and on television our age or younger and they look like the wheels are coming off. Then I think do I look that bad. My goodness!
There should be some kind of rule we live as long as our split wood lasts.
Now that would be a true wood hoarder incentive!

Gotta keep moving! The best days I have are spent working outside. And the next morning, I wake up feeling fantastic.

The chips are great for keeping weeds down
My neighbor to the right and 2 neighbors to the left all use the chips
I am the only one who has access from the street to the rear yards. Have taken lots and lots of dump loads back there for all 4 of us. I spread them as soon as they are dumped. About a foot thick after about a year it’s rich compost.
Did I say no weeds and rich compost. It’s an unending supply just keep rotating where the trucks dump.
Takes about 20 minutes to spread with tractor. A day of hard work without (pre tractor and seldom done)

I also like dumping the wood on top of a nice new foot thick layer of chips. Keeps the wood and me cleaner when working on it

Great score! I'm convinced that the whole process of cutting, splitting, stacking, and carrying firewood is one of the best workouts a person can get.
