I've had the Oslo set up in an existing fireplace going on 4 years now and have a question about adding a rear heat shield.
I do get adequate heat now without the heat shield but was wondering if adding one would throw more heat out of the front. Right now, I'm not sure how much heat I lose heating up the fireplace cavity.
If I burned 24/7 I'm thinking I would not see that much overall benefit since all the stone and block does put off some heat after a weekend of burning. But I mostly come home from work, light a fire and sometimes reload once before going to bed. This keeps the house comfortable all night until temps dip into the lower twenties overnight. I mostly wake up to a 65–68-degree house which is fine with us.
I have a block off plate and the stove does not really sit in the opening except for maybe 2-3 inches.

    Any thoughts on this?

Have you tried a small desktop size fan behind the stove?

    Thanks!
We lucked out finding this house. Here is a wider view. We have 19' ceilings with a loft and fairly open floor plan. Two ceiling fans run 24/7 and some nice passive solar coming in the when the leaves fall.
Heating and cooling this place is not as bad as thought it would be.

That is a sterling engine fan and does an ok job of moving a little heat. I mostly have it because I like gadgets. :)

I really don't want to see or run cords. Plus it's silent.

Man, that’s a load of coals in there, must be hitting 600* plus! If we loaded ours up that much we would have to open up all of the windows and doors . I don’t know your location though so that likely makes a difference. Agree it’s a nice looking place!

I mostly stay at or under 500 on my stovetop thermometer. This is just the way my setup likes to run it seems. I do occasionally get close to 600 but if I turn the air down this stove can control it from getting out of hand.
I burn mostly 3 year seasoned oak and it coals nicely in this stove.

Yes, we have a Oslo 500 stove also. About 25 years old non cat but couldn’t tell you what version. On the coldest days we can get to 500 but usually 350-400 is plenty for us. We have a cathedral ceiling in this room but no open 2nd level, if we did I could easily see us at 500* We are burning well seasoned white oak currently too:D
