Last winter I picked up 3 Jonsered 670s in pieces, and figured I'd get at least 2 running. Starting here with the 670 Champ. Bearings and crank looked great, so I didn't need to split the case. Someone hacked the air filter cover and included a velocity stack, so this one is going to get a new K&N filter. Everything else will be pretty much stock with as many OEM parts as possible. The original cylinder needed Heli coils, but other than that it was in nice shape. Found a nice used boot in my parts boxes, and I'm using a new Meteor piston
It's hard to find good used mufflers for these, so I take the aftermarket jungle mufflers, braze the round outlet shut, and put on a side deflector with a fire screen. Here are 2 that are finished. Inside is just an open can, no baffle. New seals are in, oil pump installed with new o-ring, and it's time to do a vac and pressure test. I use an old 630 cylinder that I made into a jig ... quick and easy. Piston, ignition, and flywheel installed, ready to put on the cylinder, muffler, etc. These saws are so easy to work on, and it's a classic design that still cuts with the modern saws. Sorting through two carburetors to get one that is correct and clean.
You can pressure test the carb before you put the metering side back on, and see right away if you have a leak from the inlet needle or maybe from the pump cover gasket. Nothing unique here to the 670. Carb installed with a new impulse hose, fuel line, and filter. Checking the fit for the velocity stack and cover Just like 1985! This one gets a full wrap handle and a big aftermarket dog. Pretty much complete. I need to get the dog installed, find a bar and chain, fill it up and make some smoke. Should be running this weekend, and we'll see how it cuts. Not the prettiest one that I have run across, but this is a workin' man's saw.
look'n good!.....I redid a 625II a few years ago with a 272xp top end, it really ran well, sold it to a friend two years ago, and he really likes it, great saws to bring back to life, and then some!!..........
Love it, dont see many of these around these days ive kinda always wanted one. What are the differences between the 670 champ and 670 west coast.
The Champ was mosly a decal thing for marketing. West coast versions came with the wrap handle and the K&N filter. The Champs I have run across have all had the standard air filter, but this one had the velocity stack added by a previous owner.
Fired up the saw last night and will get some more pictures. The intake honk with the K&N is a great sound!
Pictures of it finished up, with the big spike. This saw runs great! Hope to get out this week and cut up some 24" fir logs.
I agree - the 625/670 make a great "hybrid" with the aftermarket 268 and 272 kits, and the 625's can be found fairly cheap.
