A while back, I think late summer, I traded a 198? Yamaha three wheeler to a friend for a Jred 2171. The saw needed some work as did the three wheeler. Well I brought it to a good friend of mine, Adirondackstihl, for an overhaul. He has built a few saws for me over that last couple of years and does wonderful work. The saw was completely gone through including a new Meteor piston. Also the must have muffler mod along with some mild port work and a base gasket delete.

Well yesterday I got the saw back after a few weeks of him having it. I slapped a new 18" Husqvarna bar on her and fueled it up when I got home from work. As usual I was not disappointed. I also have a Husqvarna 372 with a muffler mod, same saw in orange panties, and there's no comparison. Job well done Jeremy.

The saw came from a logger, so you can just imagine how beat up it was. Well the serial number plate was missing. You must improvise!!

What process did you use for stripping that bar?

I used a Makita GV5000 buffer to get all the paint off. I'm not sure what type of wheel is on it. It's what we have at work. I'll take pictures of it when I get home. Then I used a maroon scotchbrite pad on my palm sander lengthwise on the bar to get the brushed stainless look. The buffer does leave some swirled scratches in the bar, but I think a little more time with the scotchbrite pad and some polish would take it out. I'm not overly concerned as it's a tool and not a shelf queen, but it sure does look good!

Did you go back and re-paint the tip black, or did you have another one on hand? If paint, what type and will it hold up?

I repainted tip. I forget the brand but it's just black enamel spray paint. Not sure how well it'll hold up. I'll let you know!
