A friend asked if I wanted some ash logs from a tree her neighbor had taken down. Texted me a photo. "Sure!" I said. They looked smaller in the photo. I had a helluva time horsing them into the truck. Got them home, unloaded and cut up. It was dang hot and humid outside (close to 90 and 90) and I was a sweaty mess, so I decided to split them another time. I might have been a bit tired too..... Think I'll rest and have a cold one now.
Nothing like a hard earned beer. I’m pretty much done with summer splitting. I’ll collect logs stack em but save the splitting For late fall/winter.
Anybody else love when the bark peels off like that? (I break it up small and keep it in those large brown bags we use for leaves - not sure if that’s an East Coast thing or if those bags are all over… aside from my lawn care ignorance, I find dried out bark to be great kindling.) Otherwise what a great score. Although I’m feeling some sympathy thinking about you splitting that triple crotched piece.
I had some shortie spruce rounds sitting on the driveway for a while and finally split some yesterday. The bark fell right off. I gather all the debris from using the splitter and hand splitting and fill up those 40 gallon garbage cans. Once full I run the contents through the smaller CPE wood chipper and it then goes directly into the compost pile. For kindling I make them out of shortie rounds. Made this pile in about 20 minutes from a few rounds of spruce and then straight into the IBC tote you see in the background. The kindling I make now will be used for winter 2022.
