buzz-saw had me over yesterday to mill some logs. Part of them for a project im working on. Red cedar (juniper) and a "mystree" softwood...some type of ornamental yard tree him and i scrounged late last Winter. If anyone can ID it please do! (log on the forks) Made some nice stock though. His new digital thickness guage. An old neighbor of his stopped by and wanted an oak slab trimmed up. Some brainstorming and the cookie jig got it done. He upgraded his brush! Great time as always.
The mistree log looks kinda like port orford cedar to me, was it pretty strong smelling? Port Orford cedar is about as strong smelling as red cedar/ juniper, but not quite the same smell.
I wonder if that’s the Atlantic white cedar I spotted in one of your guys’ posts a while back? You’re in the native range being close enough to the ocean.
It had very little aroma and what it did have wasnt a cedar smell. Im thinking its some type of arborvitae
Is it cool to see them once sliced open. I practically marvel at everyone especially the cedar. Look back in the milling section and find our older threads. Problem now is i see logs for lumber instead of firewood.
We spent a couple hours on the mill again this morning. I got to run the mill for a bit...woohoo!!! The one cedar log was rather special as it came from my step daughters place. Her BF had cut it down when the electric service was put in. Rather than turn it into kindling i told them we'd mill it into something usable. Resulted in a 4x4 and some 3/8" thick stock ill make lattice out of for their porch enclosure im working on. Three shorter (scrounged that length) mulberry logs made some nice stock. I later ran the thin cedar through my table saw for the lattice stock. 3/8" x 1.5"
Here are a couple pictures from the last outing. Looking down from upstairs in shop before starting A little tool holder that I mounted to the last log bunk ; holds tape measure , some tools , pencils and log crayon and a couple bottles of water or some spray paint. I was bored at work one day last week. And a holder for BRAD's favorite new tool , a fuzzie brush.
Those are some good looking boards! Do you have any pics on how the EZ View DRO is mounted? I bought the Central Machinery Harbor Freight Sawmill earlier this year and would love to mount something like this on there.
I have a couple on my phone. It was a super easy installation. Let me try to find them and I can send them to you. It actually fit perfect where the magnetic log ruler was stuck on.
Assembled the lattice today. I was short 3' and ran a scrap through the table saw. Needed two 2x4' panels that will get framed with some 1x4 cedar stock hence some of the "rough" edges. Custom fitted on site.
