Ok, I'll tell ya'. It's this stuff that I just got from my brother and his wife for Christmas (yeah, they're a little slow). I'm part Irish, so there's that.

That's what the little flyer said too, but I shut the door. Didn't smell a thing. :D
I forgot to ask where they got it.

Peat or as the Irish call it turf! It's a treat to watch it harvested. Like everything else it used to be cut by hand but now they have machines the go through the peat bogs and slice it and squeeze the water out of it.

Once in a while they uncover an ancient Irishman buried in the peat. The tannin in the peat is a remarkable preservative. It keeps the body in such a state of preservation that the individule could have died 2 to 2000 years ago.

Ireland used to have electric generating plants the were fired by peat. I don't know if the still do.

When we were cycling through the Irish countryside some years ago, in the mornings and evenings you could smell the turf fires burning in the stoves and fireplaces. It's a lovely smell. It burns nicely too.

It was about 3 to 4 times that size when cut wet. Back in the day, most every Irish farmer cut their own peat and had a turf press to squeeze the water out of the peat blocks before they were stacked in racks to air and sun dry before using as fuel.
