I think this is some type of hickory? Very difficult to split. My Fiskar maul can usually get through anything. I am no power lifter but gave up on one log.
Hickory can be pretty tough and stringy. Looks like a Hickory to me as well. Sent from my SM-G930VL using Tapatalk
By hand, generally speaking, is hickory easier to split when green or dry? I ask because I have one that is dying and needs to be felled. Once down and bucked should I wait before splitting?
Work it from the outside in- trying to split a green round in half is a fools errand. I’d recommend hydraulics
I've only split it with a hydraulic splitter. Green. Most of the big rounds had a crack around the growth rings. So it all split easy. It was very heavy !
It's still vertical, and there are no hydraulics. I'm guessing 8 inches diameter. Sounds like some wedge and sledge ahead. buZZsaw BRAD any input on this?
Looks like bitternut hickory based on the bark. I have found very fresh cut hickory either dead or alive splits the easiest. If the ends start to check then its tougher. Had a bunch of hickory rounds that sat for several months and it was not fun to hand split.
IME either dead or green split about the same. Rather "easy" if very fresh cut. This hickory was 22 month old blowover so dead when i bucked. 028 vs. a dead Hickory. This hickory was green cut rounds that have sat for six months. Not a pleasant experience with the isocore Processing Hickory. 100 splits then call it quits. If you have rounds that have sat and the ends checked, let the ends get wet. Makes it easier IME.
