So from my last scrounge of ash I ended up with about a cord and a half of already cut rounds. They are all about 3” too long to fit north to south in the Quadrafire. Is it worth the time and effort to cut them all to fit that way or just deal with loading east/west? If it’s worth cutting them again, do I just half them and end up with shorter than ideal pieces or cut to ideal and end up with a big pile of cookies? North south gives me longer burns but I can’t decide if it’s worth the hassle. I appreciate any input thanks.
I'd just burn em. Handling firewood another couple of times and time/fuel cutting not worth it to me. Each to their own
Wait they fit east west? Why cut shorter to burn N/S Does quadfire burn better that way? If not.. Split stack and burn it how it fits!
Myself if it was a small amount I would just burn them but that much for me is almost 1/2 the burn season so I would be cutting them down but whatever makes your socks roll up and down, that's just me.
It’s worth it to me. I don’t like it but it’s what I need to do. I previously had a fisher mama bear. It would take 24” splits. We now have a ideal steel. It takes a 22” split east west. Problem is I can get more wood in if I load 16” splits north south. Plus we just ordered a fireview which takes 16” splits. I have roughly 15 cord that’s cut 20-22”. It sucks but I’m going cut it to 16”. I through this together and it works. These are the cookies from one cord of locust trimmed down to 16”. They will burn!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks, that’s a good point. I made one of those last year and really liked it until my son decided he needed the wood for his tree fort and pilfered it. It’s all good , tree forts are important when you are 8.
I don’t know what I just did trying to reply to slowcum, double posted it. I am going to take that advice and build another sawbuck and cut it. If you are going to do something you might as well do it right. I am beyond impressed about that effort you are taking to re cut all that split wood. I am envious of your future fireview, that’s on my wish list for about 3 years from now.
My Englander likes one big E/W piece in the back on low heat need days during shoulder season. If it were my wood , I'd leave it long.
I'm cutting down a bunch of 24" splits that were earmarked for owb, now need to fit in IS. Royal PITA, even with a nice H-frame that I made to halve them. Unfortunately, they only fit diagonally if I don't cut them.. Can't load a stove that way, so down they go. Lots of 12" splits on deck next year! If I could switch my loading direction and avoid the chore, I would. IS burns fine either EW or NS imo.
The fireview is for my wife. The ideal steel is our first stove with a glass door. We love it! Only thing is it’s in our basement. The wife wants it upstairs in our living area. It’s to much stove for that 1000sq ft. She don’t ask for much, so she is getting the fireview. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think I'd burn them EW & not re cut. Use them on weekends & days you're around to re load as needed. I find dealing with a bunch of cookies & shorts to be more time consuming than I have patience for.
I treat those like the USPS. If it fits, it ships. Burn it as long as it fits in the stove. I've got some that are too long, and have to cross cross applesauce 2 to fit in. It works fine when you don't need all the BTU'S. It's definitely not worth the hassle to cut then down, but if you were to, it would be better to have 2 decent sized 3/4 length pieces than a little chunk and a full sized piece. But if they'll still fit East/ West then just do that.
I like burning 16" pieces NS in my Quad. EW doesn't load wellfor me and it really sucks when they try to roll back out. When I get odd lengths from tree guys I trim them to 16" and a short. The even lengths stack better. Cookies go in a separate pile. A few make it to the smoker. Sometimes I mix the shorts in the stove to get near a 16" load.
I wouldn't cut to fit a certain direction unless the stove loaded or burned much better in that direction. I prefer loading N/S and avoiding the whole rolling towards the door scenario ( not that that's such a big deal ) but that's really a preference from an old stove with no window. Some of the oak I'm burning now was cut by a tree service and they are cut 18 inches plus/minus 5 inches, so I have a dozen or so splits a week that need the ends cut off. ( I can fit 21 and 3/4 long in without hitting the door ) I just put the cut off ends in a bucket and fill the stove with them at a reload. A dozen or two cutoffs isn't many.
I am glad it’s not just me that goes through that with the quad. It’s very annoying trying to load it up EW, you would think you could fit the same amount but it never happens, then I have to clean up the ashes that spill out the door when I open it because a split managed to shift forward over the end rack piece.
