I have some Cherry that needs to be c/s/s in pic 9689, the Birch is in pic 9690 & 91. I have a good idea on how I'll do the Birch so I'm just hoping Mother Nature will give me a full week of good working weather. My guess would be White.
I'm gonna have to say yellow, I use both as fire starters. White on the left and yellow on the right. Hope this helps
Pictures can be deceiving for sure but it just doesn't look yellow enough to be a yellow birch. We don't have yellow birch where we live now but some of the paper birch has a bark that looks just like Zap's picture. Other white birch looks like the white in your picture (on the left, of course).
Zap, you're looking at yellow birch for sure! The burning bark is one of my favorite smells and is an excellent fire starter; short lived, but great none the less. When I go snowshoeing I will strip some of the bark off trees as I pass them in the woods and then when its time for a break, I have a pocket of fire starting material for the fire. Dennis, never thought you'd miss on this one! That'll cost you one de-merit!
Definitely a lot of variation within the birch species, and I'm no expert, but either way it will burn great
My (and others) experience with whit birch is that it doesn't last long when stacked outside with the other hardwoods. Especially if it is in contact with the ground. Seems to turn punky and rot a lot faster. Yellow birch will last much longer the it's white birch cousin. I have some in my stacks that is over 4 years old with no signs of rot.
I'll go with yellow too. White birch peels off naturally in bigger thicker sheets. Your pic shows just thin narrow skins peeling off.
I can tell you one thing for sure, that it is birch . Careful or the Yellow Birch Matters group will get you for racism!!
Get that wood into your stacks, Dennis! Happy New Year to you and the Ornery one (if I can still get away with calling her that!)
