I usually love winter. A time to take it easy for a while. The sun goes down early so then can I unlike summer. I wake early to run the bakery. I enjoy a fire everyday. Watch some Tv and maybe get a little lazy. Not this winter. My back is sore moving so much snow. This is crazy. We have barely had a winter in the several that even come close to normal and that's around 20" or so per year. This year we are now topping over 60". That doesn't include the super cold temps, the daily snow dump from the wind in the drive from all the flanked snow banks, the ice build, and even one bird invasion. I'm glad I survived ok the bird invasion, that was weird. One person around here caught a really bad illness from birds this winter, probably something like what I went through those two super super cold days. Business is closed again today, so many days we have been slow due to weather. How are people making money to survive this? Anyway, I'll get through it. Just had to rant some after spending two hours cleaning snow again. How are all you holding up? And those of up north that deal with this every year, wow, you are real men!!!
By the time Spring gets here I am ready to stop maintaining the stoves and bending and lifting the wood to bring it into the house. The snow blowing and shoveling are a PITA too, but that doesn't need to happen 3 times a day. I get out and do a little skiing, and enjoy some of my other hobbies, photography, guitar, jazz and music in general. I do a little serivce work to give back that which was so freely given to me. So life is good. But by the time Spring rolls around I am ready for it to be here.
It's called "Cabin Fever." Got to get outside, walk around even in the bad weather. Read books, have winter projects, get away if only for a few days. Convince yourself you like snow or you'd live elsewhere LOL
Lol, you all are funny. I think your right though, cabin fever. I am usually working 12-16 hours a day doing something, either bakery related or my other business. This is the first time since I was a kid that I've seen winter stop commerce. Even when I was a kid we braved it better. Now the county shuts the roads down and say you'll get arrested if your caught driving before the storm even gets here. I know it'll pass and I know some of you live with this day and day out. I knew someone that lived in both Buffalo and in Wisconsin. Where we would be paralyzed for at least two days, they just wake up and go. At least the fire dries the coat and boots and gloves and such really quick. Ok, tomorrow back to normal
I love this weather, foot of snow today and still snowing, then some cold weather moves in down to zero a few nights, its great! I do look forward to spring and golf though but I'm still enjoying the winter weather right now, another few weeks and I'll be ready for warm weather.
Snow doesn't bother me. Its the unseasonably cold temps that grind on my. Right now our average high is suppose to be 42. Tomorrow will be a high of 28. There's a big difference in terms of heating this place. A high in the low 40s means I can get away with only one stove during the day. With a high of 28 and a low of 7? I'll be running three stoves tomorrow.
I was handling everything pretty well until the ice hit and now I am just done with it all! It didn't get warm enough to unthaw my driveway and now we are looking at temperatures well below our norm for the next ten days meaning my drive isn't going to unthaw....... Now on top of everything else I will be hiking up and down an ice covered hill for the next ten days carrying groceries and everything else under the sun and it's not a short hike . I am grouchy about this recent turn of events to say the least
At least you have a warm home and can afford groceries Cert. some folks are not so fortunate. Just trying to help you find some positive my friend.
That is completely true and I am grateful for it and my job while it lasts.... It's not the first time I have hiked my hill and it won't be the last. Just comes with the territory I guess. Looking forward to warm weather camping and fishing though . I am also gratefully to be alive and the fact the good Lord was watching out for me on Monday morning. I plowed down the drive and noticed it was a bit slippery and halfway up the hill where it is the steepest and makes a 90 degree turn all 4 wheels started spinning and I was sliding towards the bank and the ditch. I let off the throttle and it was like some one shot me backwards out of a slingshot! I took off down the hill backwards and the only thing I could do was slam the blade and tractor bucket into the ground. It spun me 90 degrees so I was going sideways and it bounced the tractor twice slamming the front of the bucket into the ditch when the bucket caught the tractor on the high side came off the ground until the blade stopped it from flipping and slammed the tractor back to the ground. It took me two hours and three comealongs to get it out of the ditch. Ice is not something to be messed around with on steep grades! I am going to get some sand and ash and spread it on the hill tomorrow to see if it helps out.
Glad it turned out ok for you Cert and you came out unhurt. Ice is a nasty thing, be carful out there.
By the way Cert...I think about your comments back awhile ago about working on a project at work and not knowing if you would have a job if it did not come out ok.....praying God is good to you.....he is faithful I know just doesn't come out to our plan sometimes.
This winter has been a tough one, out in it every day. It was -16 (not considering wind) the other morn while at work (our last cold spell). I just do the best I can to dress for it. I bought some cold weather pak boots earlier this year, some of the best money I ever spent. If my feet are worm, then Im alright
Winter should be white and cold, summer should be green and hot. I spent three years on Ft. Bragg N.C. I don't like 35 degrees and wet.
Winter just got off to a bad start for me. Never mind the short days, it got below zero cold before Christmas. And then came Christmas with no power, heat, or water. Not able to run my bipap at night. Then I fell down the garage stairs and slipped on the front stairs. The deep cold persisted and my stove wasn't able to keep up. 65 F became the new warm inside temp. Moving on. Bought a generator, two power packs and have a new stove being delivered Friday. Days are getting a little longer. The deep cold is still cold, but not so deep. It it is Maine. I was born here and have lived here all but for my military days. I hope spring will start a little better, a bit warmer, and with a bit of luck, maybe a little early.
I've noticed that the Maine black flies aren't quite as bad in blizzard snow storms… but you give em a calm 10 below zero day and they're all over ya…
