Curious. Does anyone have a rule a thumb bout when they lite up the first far in the stove? Me and my neighbor have sort of a rule - no fars til October first. Caught him burning on Sept 30 last year. He heard about it.
I usually burn in the mid 40's. As soon as I can not have to run a/c the next day after burning a fire. I'm loving the cooler temps. This is the perfect time of the year.
This is dictated to me by the temperature alone and not the calendar. Mid forties will do it to me as well. We don't have the best in insulation here in this house either.
When the house starts feeling cool, the last two years we started on Sept. 15 but this year we'll push it out towards the last week in Sept., if there forecast is correct for this area.
September is one of the favorite months for me. Usually no fire or A/C.. Try really hard to start in October. If we have a weird cold snap then it's all out the window.
Had my first fire last month. No, seriously. Like Chris said, I go by feel instead of a date. Temps can fluctuate quite a bit around here. Was 37 this am when I got up, but I'd bet it was 1 or 2 less than that about 4-5 this morning. Plenty cool enough for a fire, but the stove was still warm this morning, so I did a pre-emptive fire last night.
Going down to 46 tonight, but a cool house will be a pleasure to wake up to. When the daytime temps are down enough that there is a chill before bed, we will light a fire.
About the same boat as you, Chris F.... Should hit lows ovanight in the mid 40's here this week, but hi 70's during the day, so..... Trying not to start a fire til October for sure.
I asked my wife last night if it was chilly in the house. She touched my arm and I'm pretty sure my arm spontaneously froze. J/K, but her fingers were chilly. I started a fire. I can take a hint....as long as it's wrapped around a brick and hits me in the head.
Heck I will light a fire if it's cool and damp and I'm wet or just want one. we had fires in June on 50 degree days rainy.
Yeah, but you're "right where you want to be" and we're in southwest VA. Sweat shirts for the next 3 weeks- no matter WHAT!!!
I try to wait till Halloween here in western WA, some years I make others I dont and start a few weeks ealier
Who else can just keep fires going pretty much year-round? Can't say I've ever had one in July............yet. Hey, she started it. I think. I've been in some "right where I don't wanna be" places, so this is gooder.
Do you need a rule? If your cold lite the fires!!! … Here in the A$$ part of the world, I usually won't lite'r off till after Halloween, and if it's cold that night, I'll fire it off for the kiddies, makes a nice ora for trick or treat.
that's funny! I am blessed my wife doesn't hint... She tells me... she gets it.. I love her bluntness.... I ask her wrong she says xyz! I do not have to wonder or worry or spend time guessing! I do however have to spend time and whatever else fixing xyz.. Mrs papadave.. cold hands message was cold and clear!
Used to generally start mid September. Since replacing all the windows and the fact we have had warmer falls the last couple of years, it seems beginning of October is more common. This year so far who knows. Today was wet cool and cloudy. They say by mid week it's supposed to be 80.
I usually won't need one till October, but will build one earlier if need be. Low down to 41 degrees here tonight, I built a small little "test" fire this afternoon just to check things out, sfter I did a good stove cleaning.
I typically load up the stove with paper and cardboard over the summer, then on a chilly morning, light it up. Takes the chill and dampness out of the air. However this week "they" are forecasting warm temps, so I won't need a fire for another week or so.
