Happened upon this Beech on a woods walk. On top of a ridge with the prevailing wind coming from left to right. Years of wind have created a cool pattern. Beech is my favorite firewood. 20191020_172224~2.jpg

That is cool. Never seen anything like that before. It'd make some interesting grained lumber, not that id wanna cut it down. Thanks for sharing!

That is certainly different. Looks like the jolly green giant had bent it over for a snare.
How big are the rabbits on this ridge?

Weird! That would be interesting to get a botanist's/forester's opinion of it.

Looks like an elephant trunk. Never seen one like that. Very cool.

Wind effect was just my theory while inspecting it. Reading more about causes of different figure in wood leads me to think the split stump may be the cause of this tree's odd growth. One part growing faster than the other. It continued up the one side of the trunk for about 30 feet or so. I welcome any other insight to learn more.

I vagly recall seeing another beech like that but it was many, many moons ago. I asked another old-time logger about it and he just shrugged his shoulders. Not sure of the cause.

The damaged trunk ( pic doesn't show how far down) was my first thought.
    That's still fairly unique.

I haven't seen a grove like that for quite a while. The one near here was cut down to put up luxury apartments.
Carvings in beech last a long time.

That is about it for the base of the tree in the picture other than a few moss covered inches and leaf litter.

For clarity I was referencing carvings in the bark.
This "Bible Tree" carvings are believed to be 100 or so years old:

The Bible Tree and the surrounding rock carvings are in Brookville, Pa.

So, as with much social media (and digital media in general), be careful what you write and where. LOL.
