in the Fireview tonight. The old cast iron scoop burned through and the part is now obsolete.
The new "Modified Combustor Scoop" is pretty easy to install and Woodstock gives you some pretty good instructions. The replacement scoop and the expanded metal screen are constructed of stainless steel and is a one piece replacement. The hardest part is removing the old bolts and, I must admit, it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The instructions tell you to use a penetrating spray multiple times and thats what I did. Each time I sprayed some Blaster I would follow with a few taps with a hammer on the bolt head then I would put the wrench or ratchet on the bolt and tap on the wrench handle again while pulling the wrench. The bolts and old scoop supports are replaced by 2 new SS posts that are installed in same holes. the new scoop just hooks in above the bypass frame like the old scoop then rotates forward and up over the new scoop posts then a cotter pin is pushed through the post to hold it in place.
here are pics of the new scoop and hardware.

the new ss screen is a very thin wire mesh and gets bright pink/orange just like combustor.
I tried to get a pic but it didn't show up too good

As a big guy who struggles working in tight spaces, I have to ask did all this work get done by reaching through the tiny Fireview load door? Or can anything be done by removing the cat and reaching down?

It was mostly just through the door, but it wasn't too bad. I was able to look down through the combustor opening to see what I was doing when working on the left side. The scoop bolts are right on the edge of the combustor opening.

Good for you Tim. I have a new one but it will wait to get replaced. My body says to wait, so I will.

Will your current parts make it through this season Dennis?

I don't see why not. It's not in the best shape but causes no big problem so we'll wait.

I've installed a couple of those, pretty easy and its a good design except those cotter pins ware out and sometimes get knocked out if your trying to squeeze in that extra split. I think I'd rather have threaded rods with nuts.

Does it have a hole in it yet? If not, dont worry about it. Mine had a hole burnt through it so I laid a piece of metal on top and it bought me some time. It really fell apart quick once the hole started

No, it is cracked but that should not bother. I'll keep watch of it during the winter though.

Are the hitch pins stainless ? My Buck cat shield had normal cotter pins that you slid in and bent over which made them a pain to remove but it is the only way to get at the cat. I went to hitch pins like that but the only thing I could find local was normal steel which didn't hold up well to the heat. I found a source for stainless online and ordered several, they seem to work much better.

No. just zinc coated. but they are really easy to change. Guess i should get a handful and keep them next to the stove

Yep the zinc coated is what I had, here you go if you decide you want stainless. A little longer but work just fine.

No minimum or maximum on that one.... I think I bought either 12 or 16, it takes 4 for mine. I'd have to look, don't remember for sure

McMaster Carr would have those too, but if you have a fastenal close, they are cheap parts. Fastenal charges much more than even McMaster. However, these points are so inexpensive that a 10% upcharge isn't noticeable.

I actually think I had more in shipping than the parts but they were the only ones I found that had stainless that small and no local Fastenal stocked them. Sometimes when you find something that you know will do what you want you just lay the money down. Never heard of McMaster Carr if I need more maybe I'll check with them.

Oh god, I'm sorry. McMaster Carr is your new best friend you never knew you had. Every odd ball whatchamajiggy nut and bolt, in every material ever known to man available, ships cheap and super fast. Me, I buy from their Chicago office and get it next am, via ground ups. As a Buyer ( hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, electrical, and mechanical now) they've saved my butt, and allowed my company to meet shipping deadlines.
