Just curious how far you all take your chains before you chuck them in the trash. I’ve heard some go halfway down the tooth, some go to the angle guide line, and some go further. I’m in the last category…I take them down to pointed triangles…seems much beyond that they start breaking off regularly. Although I have never put a stopwatch on them, I don’t seem to notice a lot of difference between factory new and pointed triangles, maybe even a bit faster at the halfway point. What do you guys and gals do?
I sharpen to the marker and stop. I don’t think it performs as well at that point and bore cutting can be impossible.
^^ This about where I stop. At that point it has done it's duty verses the cost. It is part of the cost of running any equipment. Like brakes on your car , it is a wear item.
I run em till a toth or two breaks then I know it's time for a new one. Sent from my SM-S536DL using Tapatalk
I claim victory once I get to the guide line. The chains are not trashed though. They get 'put in' when I have a stump to flush or I know for a fact I'm gong to be sawing dirt. Beyond that...I have a friend who like to play with a forge. Chains are of very good steel, so are bars.
With a light touch from the grinder and if you can avoid rocks and metal, I find chains last many years when cutting 5 cords per year. Maybe softwoods are easier on chains. I go all the way until the first tooth breaks off. Why not? They work until then. Not all chains have that guide mark.
Yeah, by then the rest are getting pretty silly. Wouldn't want it to cut crooked so I would have to snip off a tooth facing the opposite direction.
I'll run a chain until it has less teeth than an old tom cat. Everyone needs at least one stumping chain lol
