Had to stop at the grocery store today, on the way in I spotted these...
    20150602_140204.jpg

Swedish candles, just $14.99 each... plus tax! I get that they are peeled logs, with a nice little rope handle... but really, rough guess that would be $1200 per cord... for pine!

The guy that processes my father in laws wood says he sells 9= 3inx3inx16in sticks of fire wood for $6.00 each, roughly $720.00 per cord.

I've had a couple people ask me to make them . Heck , I never heard of it or if it even works? Brother in law asked me to take a round and split it into 4 equal pieces and he was gonna tie a wire or something around it to hold it together. Sounds like alot of work for a camp fire !

I made one for my Sis-in-law a couple years ago. She still has it.
Gotta' be dry enough to burn by now.

Wonder if a dead ash round would work? Of course I have some twisty , nasty, elm rounds that I could split in nice , neat , 4 wedges . Lol

I made one last summer, but I didn't split the log, just noodled it three times 3/4 the length of the log, neat little fire.

It would be better off the logs were filled with fireworks, like mortars and roman candles.

Seriously how would you make one of these Swedish candles? My wife sees them at the store. They are $20 here.

Drill/ saw the core out, saw some "splits" on the top, full with pine pitch, bacon grease, or slow burning fuel. Then light it?

I'm serous about making a couple of these, I'm not allowing my wife to waste $20 on one. When I can probably make one better, even if I don't fill it with fireworks.:emb:

Looks like they made a more or less standard Swedish candle after using a large diameter bit to bore a hole in the center of the log. Normally a Swedish candle is just 3 or 4 chainsaw kerfs cut down maybe 3/4 of the way in a round and all meeting in the center. By starting with a larger center hole you just make it a bit easier to light. If you had a hole the right size a wax and dryer lint Girl Scout fire starter would work great to get it going.

Thanks for the tutorial FarmHand78 !

    It's almost too easy.

I'll have to make one this summer.

I'll use a chunk of dead standing elm. That way I won't need to split it!;)

This one was from some silver maple I cut down 2-3 years ago, should be good and dry from the way it was splitting.

    Hmmm?
Actually a clever idea. I like the way they have that fire starter strip hidden in a hole behind the label. Although a hidden bag of marshmallows might be a better idea???
