If anyone has trouble with a merchant, it does pay to contact the credit card company

    We recently made a purchase from a very well known company located in the New England area. They have been in business for a long, long time and we have ordered from them off and on through the years. Most of their goods are excellent. In fact, I still have a hunting outfit purchased from them back around 1987 that I still wear and it is in excellent condition.

    However, we recently ordered something from them and they shipped the wrong size. I returned it and asked for a refund simply because I did not like the way it was made and it disturbed me that they sent the wrong size and it appeared they really didn't even want to fix the problem.

    So, in the end, rather than refunding the dollars, they sent a gift card. What? I did not request a gift card but requested a refund. Called them but got nowhere.

    So, called the credit card company we do business with. It took two days to get this straighened out as just a few minutes ago we received an email stating that rather than a gift card we were refunded the full amount on the credit card.

    Problem fixed.

    This is only the second time we've ever had a problem with a merchant. Now we can say that each time the credit company has fixed the problem.

    Definitely one of the benefits of a credit card vs a debit card.

    Pretty positive I know what company you are talking about. 1 1/2 hours from me, haven't been there in 20 years. They went all yuppie and the products went downhill big time. No more lifetime guarantees and if you return anything it's a gift card so you spend more at their store. Kinda sickening when you know what the store was built on all those years ago.

    Agreed 100% Sav. I have had to use this method a couple of times as well.

    Taking it to the next level, use PayPal to pay the merchant, paying them (PayPal) with the credit card. That puts another intermediary between you and the merchant if things go bad.

    Recently I had a problem with a purchase, and the merchant was all about the fine print. Well, the fine print is all good, but what if the thing they sold is useless for the purpose it was advertised to be used for? (being intentionally vague here) They refused to refund due to fine print, not defective, etc.

    I appealed to PayPal, and all of a sudden the merchant decided to do a "one-time exception" to policy. If it didn't work appealing to PayPal, then I would have taken the case to the credit card company. So it gives two shots at the appeal.

    as tree killer said it turned yuppie and went down hill ,they no longer serve their original customers with traditional outdoor interests ,there not the first look what happened to eddie bauer and abercrombie and fitch there history is amazing now they are trash .

    The reason they did away with the lifetime warranty, was because their labelled products were being bought at yard sales, thrift shops, and such. These products were then brought to the store to be exchanged for new. Pretty scammy, imo.

    I can understand refunding with a gift card, but I don't like it.

    PayPal rocks in this aspect
    If a merchant shows they take PayPal on their merchant site , you can bet they have excellent customer service.

    That’s one of the reasons. Another big reason is products were hailed as being made in the USA, most of their branded stuff is now outsourced and quality suffered. Millennials love it though so it’s not really hurting business that bad.

    Costco has had to cut back satisfaction guarantee for the same reason(s).


    Watch those bonus gift cards some places give ya, like restaurants, they expire, sometimes in just months.

    I don’t understand why millennials want to look exactly like the people they pretty much hate and make fun of! I’m pretty sure non of us would dress up like it’s a LGBQT parade. (Unless there’s a thong involved!)

    Glad you got that taken care of. The biggest problem is you don't deal with a handshake online. Its a free for all. Nobody seems to do quality its all about quantity.


    We order from a company in ME with good success so far its the only place we can get work pants and insulated pants worth a ... anymore. Hopefully it isn't the same place.:picard: They are a little pricey the last 2 times but the quality is still better than the rest. Recently we started buying Byrne clothing from the farm store and that seems to be good too. ( not as good but good. )
