FBM find less than five minutes from me cut yesterday. Good sized sugar maple with some nice straight logs. Drive right up to cut and load. Another scrounger was there first, but still some decent wood to be had. Tree guy had bucked some rounds off the bottom and most cut to the right length. Hoping 75% is good for bundle wood inventory. What was left including knotty and crotch sections. Not going back.
LOL!!! No, but I was a little perturbed at the guy as I was first in line trying to set up an appt. to meet him and check it out before committing when he later tells me another guy was coming. I asked about having dibs, but as it seems with most FBMer's they want everything right away. I try to be fair to buyers, but I guess I'm the minority. Turns out the guy had blown him off once then showed up with a tractor to take what he wanted/could. I guess I'm the only one who does it the way I do. (the hard way) It was nice to score some straight grained sugar maple for a change. Hoping 75% generates some nice bundle quality splits. Sorry for piggybacking on your thread title but had no witty one I could think of!
It gives a good burn when dried as you've seen. I've saved small nuggets from scrounges, left on my deck to dry in the hot sun and a week later it burned great. When used in bundles I'll mix about 2/3 sugar maple or other high btu woods as they are heavy even when dried mixed with SS wood...tulip, sassy, silver maple etc. to keep the weight down. The only other heavy hitters to make their way into bundles would be black birch and oak. As I stack it in the shed I'll try to mix them accordingly. Doesn't always work out though. Funny I mention tulip as I just finished using the last of the stuff you gave me nearly two years later. One split was going in recent bundles.
The last bundles I made I used that Beech and Black Birch blend that’s been in the pen for four years. There was a touch of oak and ash in there also, filler I used to complete the pen. Wasn’t much punky stuff to remove. It lost some caloric value from sitting in log form too long but so far it’s seems pretty good. The rest of that wood will be for the family this winter,,,,time for it to disappear LOL. See what kind of complaints I get.
Split roughly half the load yesterday. Moved the bundle splits next door and stacked. General cordage tossed aside to be stacked later.
