This past Monday I pulled my last building permit. I turned 64 this past week and have sedecided to call it quits. First SS check due June 16th. (we'll see if that really happens). I have had a good run. I have been blessed with many good employees and great customers that the time went by in a flash. My son doesn't want to do what I did so I am just going to close it down as of the first of July. The phone still rings with past customers (over 800 in 28 years) so I will refer them to some of my past employees that have gone out on their own. After all, they got young kids to feed and send to school. And they helped making that referral base. I've got so many, of my own, projects to do plus The Norwegian has a list a mile long. Which is about time she is first on the job sheet, she has earned that spot. The bicycle is going to get some miles put on it and the fishing lines are going in the water more often. I also own some rental property that needs some work and then increase some rents and thus increase value. The Norwegian concludes her career as a 2nd grade teacher at the end of this school year so our lives are going to enter a new chapter. I guess I wanted to post this news because when you are in business for yourself there is no one to talk to about s--t. This forum has been the place, "I ain't the boss". I'm just another wood lover and I get to talk about things that like . So, thanks all for the companionship. I'll probably get to participate more. Marty
Congratulations Marty! Take a little time for yourself for a couple minutes, then get after some of those things on the "list". Not having an "outside the home" job is nice. You may find yourself almost as busy as when you were working. A couple examples: I just helped build a deck, now I'm heading back over to SisIL's to do some more work on a chicken coop for her (long term project as she has the funds), and my brother is coming over today so we can start dressing down some rough sawn Oak to make him a gun cabinet. Sometimes I wish all I had to do was get up and go to work, but this is more fun and varied, so.............nah. Go catch some fish. Best of luck to you and the Mrs. too, when she's done.
Another CONGRATULATIONS! It sounds as though you are going to stay quite busy with your rental's and around the house. Be sure to leave time for the bike and the fishing poles! I wish you the best!
Marty I could not be happier for you! But not only you, your wife too! May I suggest no matter how you feel toward each other, take time to really fall in love with each other all over again. The benefits are enormous! Good to hear you have some plans to keep you occupied too as those who retire then just sit around don't last long. Do the things you enjoy doing! Ride that bike. Fish. Hunt. Do whatever makes you happy. A little work helps too and it sounds as if you have that planned. If you are like most of us, you will soon wonder how on earth you found time to go to work because you'll be so busy around the house the time will fly by. Speaking of that time flying by, be very aware of that. If you have wanted to do some traveling, I suggest you do not put it off. Do it now! Your bodies are probably still in good shape but as you know, age tends to wear you down a bit and later you won't feel like going here or there or doing this or that. Don't put it off until it is too late. I know my wife and I are very thankful we did some traveling when we did as now we can't do so much of that sort of thing. We're not ready to roll over but we don't have the energy now to do some things we did then and the bodies can't so some of those things either. It's just another stage in life though.
Really good advice Dennis, on doing things now......don't delay too much. Just in the last couple years, I've slowed down quite a bit, and I'm just a hair younger than Marty. The "Golden Years"..............
Awesome news Minnesota Marty Take some time to get used to not being at the "office". You are going to enjoy being home. Backwoods Savage had some great advice to travel while you can as medical insurance gets more expensive as you get older.
Thanks all for the kind words and well wishes. It means alot. A month or so ago my wife had her spring break and I decided that at the time I didn't have too much going that we would do some projects, things and "hangin out time" We called it our practice time for retirement. That was a good time. Dennis, you are so correct that one needs to take the time to fall in love again. It won't be hard because I "lucked out" with who I married. We are going to be spending alot of time together. So, yeah Yooperdave, let's meet in Two Harbors for the victory cigar. Marty
