I need to get a new small hand axe, what should I get and from where? Any good deals out there?

I use it for knocking of small branches, finishing off splits that done come apart on the splitter, kindling... the only "feature" I like on them, is the other side must act like a mallet/small sledge so I can hammer in wedges when cutting tree's, or knock posts into ground....

Educate me! Never had a "Fiskars", what's that all about?

Fiskars makes nice splitters but they are not something I would use as a hammer for a wedge. I do most of my splitting with one and rarely need to resort to the wedge and sledge method where a hydraulic splitter would be handy to have. You might have a look at your local big box store. Small hand axes are made by lots of folks and are fairly inexpensive to buy.

Math anyone??? When did 64 oz.'s equate to 4 Lbs ??

    That looks perfect though....

I'm not going to do any "splitting" with it, I do have a hydro splitter, except for the occasional making some kindling with it maybe. And for the wedge, I'm referring to hammering a wedge into a tree when falling it, or bucking it to keep the pressure/pinch off the chainsaw bar/chain. ;)

It works great for making kindling, I sometimes use it to re split for checking moisture content, it has enough weight to do it.
And the back side is basically a 4lb hammer

Here I'm makin kindling from pallet wood

The nice thing with a fiskers is you break it, "send it back" get a new one free… They are good like that and it's a decent quality tool. The small axe's are very light, I carry one on my ATV when we go out "just incase"..

Oh, just curious, is it an axe or a hatchet you want? Technically and axe is much larger than a hatchet but verbiage is used for both.

I have a Council axe that I can use for that. It's a 5 lb but they make smaller ones. I got it from Madsens.

    Last time I checked 64 oz is 4 lbso_O

I suppose if the tool were made of gold, it would be measured in troy pounds with 12 oz to the pound...
