My 029 has been down for about 8 years now... Yes, I know... :headbang::picard: I stripped the spark plug out about 2013, or around there when Sandy hit here, I put it on the shelf and didn't touch it. I have other saws so I kinda just kept looking at it saying, (someday).
Well, Last week I ordered the Save-a-thread helicoil insert kit, I got it yesterday and I spent the day fixing it. I can't say enough Good things about that kit, it worked really well!
The old girl now runs as good as it ever did and that saw didn't ever get much use. It had 18" on it and I treated her to the 20" Brand new!!! Here's some (before and after) pics.
I'm no great Chainsaw mechanic but I'm fine if I take my time and don't drink Beer while I'm working on them...:drunk:

    Nice job!
Hardest part on the 029 is wrestling the tank/cover away from and onto the AVs.
From where you went, you were 15 minutes and a 100 bucks away from an 039

I know! I did research it. :headbang: I do like this saw though, and it didn't have many hours on it at all, that's why I just fixed it. I have a MS390, ported, big bore kit and muffler mod already and she's a screamer! I also have a MS290 farm Boss that was the back up to this one until I F---_D up this one. This is a real smooth saw and I always wanted the 20"on it. So it is done now. :)

Loved my 029 Super...bought it at a pawn shop about 20 years ago ($125 !!!) and cut at least 100 cord with it, and never failed to start. Alas, I had a dumb attack a couple years ago and straight gassed it. Miss that saw.

Good you got it now working. Now you have another one that you have another one that you need to run every so often to keep it running well.

Glad you got it fixed. I ran my buddies 029Super for several yrs. Good saw. I got our 029 back from him and had Kevin do the big bore kit on it. I love it with 20" bar now...

I think that if the piston and cylinder was beat, I would have done the big bore also but I really liked that saw and it ran well. So, I finally got off my A$$ and fixed it. It really needed the 20" bar though, it never felt right with the 18". I have it as a back up if needed. Maybe not... ;)

Ours was kinda beat. Really sluggish with the 20" on it back then.

I heard folks say those big bore kits weren't that great? Never used one and I have a 390 not a 290/029

Kevin found a 039 top end, did a little port work on it, pop up piston. It out cut our stock 362...it has plenty of torque

Nice work Dave, those kits are a real life saver a lot of times. I don't think I've met a firewooder that didn't run an 029/290 at some point. Super reliable saws that get it done.

I actually have both! I had the 029 super first and then picked up the MS290 used but in super shape a few years later, (after) I screwed up the 029 Super.
