How sharpe should the wedge on a splitter be?
I keep mine at a good edge but not sharpe like an ax or hatchet.

Reasoning is , when I come to limbs in the wood, I want to cut them more than push them into the wood deforming the splits

    IMO
A sharp wedge will help a lot with stringy wood. It’ll cut instead of push

All bets are off when splitting “gum” :)

Just sharpened the hatchet(near knife sharp)
    Touched up the splitter wedge
    Used a flat bastard

Splitter hasn't seen much use lately, but I put a decent edge on the wedge a couple years ago. I like it.

Is that a Fiskars hatchet? How do you sharpen it?

I use a file to take out the burs, then the Fiskars sharpening tool, but it takes forever to get a sharp edge.

    Yes, Fiskars
    I used a bastard file
    Worked fine
Not shaving sharp, but would slice a tomato & cut wood

    Lol.

I've never heard of one either.

Now, I split a lot of elm, and it's stringy. I never bother with sharpening the splitter wedge. It seems to work just fine. IDK, maybe I should try the dull wedge first in some elm, then sharpen it and try it on the same elm and make a decision?

And we're back to my apprenticeship.

"The cut of the file refers to how fine its teeth are. They are defined as (from roughest to smoothest): rough, middle, bastard, second cut, smooth, and dead smooth. A single-cut file has one set of parallel teeth while a cross-cut or double-cut file has a second set of cuts forming diamond shaped cutting surfaces"

We've split well over 300 cord with our splitter but have never touched up the wedge. It works just fine.

I had some stringy birch that the wedge cut thru, some is wood tough
Figure if it’s cutting (not splitting) sharper helps

If any problems appear I will try touching up the wedge. Yes, I'll get a bastard to do it too.

    Yea
You have pretty good splitting wood .
Bet it’s rare to have to run the wedge
    all the way down,
then use a hatchet to finish it off
I think some birch has some gum genes

Yeah I've had my splitter for 10 years and never touched the wedge.

If it wasn't raining I'd go out and take a pic but I don't think it looks too bad.

I remember keeping the splitting wedge nice and sharp on a small electric splitter I used inside, years ago. It helped...

I don't have a hydraulic splitter but the one on my split second is pretty sharp.
