A while back, I was fortunate enough to converse with a tech on an appliance forum. My washer was having issues. Well I’ve got a strange one for you! I have a house with a bunch of worthless prefab fireplaces. I’d like to offset some propane and heat pump heating cost with wood BTUs. It’s not ideal for placement, but I think I could fit a wood furnace like a Kuuma VF100 into the basement with my two heat pump furnaces with propane emergency heat that supply two separate floors. Any way to use the wood furnace to send heat to both systems? I thought of a multi-zone system controlling two motorized dampers, but finding three stage heating thermostats seems hard and I am not sure how to hook it all up exactly. Or I could just put a manual damper on the smaller system and send the rest to the bigger system. In any case, does it seem like the VF100 blower could continue to work when pushing against the furnaces blowers when they kick on? The VF100 won’t keep up completely as I have a pretty big house so heat pump or propane will still be used sometimes. For you, you are going want to look at an add on fireplace, basically a wood stove that connects to your existing duct work/ furnace. You build a fire and the blower fan runs to push the heat into the house. They are a between $1000-$2000, but worth it if it's done right. Do not put in a zoning system! In my experience with zoning out a house, when one zone is calling for heat and the others are not you can potentially choked off your gas furnace or plenum heater causing it to trip the overloads and then you have NO heat. Just because the fan is still running at the same speed doesn't make more air move into the zone. Most duct work only adds pressure when you close dampers. And as far as thermostats go, look at the Honeywell's T6 Pro Wi/Fi, 3 heat , 2 cool thermostat. This is the one I install, and everyone loves them!!
