I just picked up this saw today from the dealer. It's a Christmas present for a great friend. I use Huskies but I researched this style saw a lot. I read some really great things and some really bad things. I would like some thoughts if you have time about the purchase and any positives or negatives from experience. If it is garbage we will take it back and get him a Stihl. He is a Stihl guy but the last time he went to this shop with me he couldn't walk away from their demo. Thanks in advance.

Brandon Scott , can I be your friend, please? They sound like a great saw and I'm sure he will love it, unless he is the type that unless it's Stihl it's junk. Keep us posted on what he thinks and Merry Christmas.

Sure, you can be my friend. The backstory...

Earlier this year I ran into several personal problems. Family related. Depression settled in and I turned to the bottle. I have always drank socially but this was different. I got to the point where I wouldn't eat and just drink all day. The last 2 months in the spring were bad. I talked to my buddy Charlie about needing help. Well I put it off for 3 weeks. He called me on a Sunday and told me if I didn't go by Wednesday he was taking me. I called right then. He dropped me off on Memorial Day. I spent 30 days in rehab. That was eye opening!!! I was locked up with 40 heroin and opioid addicts. I learned a lot there. Haven't had a drink since. He saved my life. I would've died within that month. Can't repay that to him but I would do anything for him. Since then I have lost over 50 lbs and feel like I'm 30 again, I'm 48. Say what you want but it takes a "man" to admit his shortcomings and walk into rehab. Look at me spreading Christmas cheer!

I will take you up on that. You are right, much better way to live. I see a lot of my friends struggling but fear keeps them from seeking help. I don't condemn anyone for drinking. It is fun if you don't let it get to the point I did. I see many on here talking about drinking all the time and that is great, but if you ever have the inkling it is a problem seek some help. It will truly set you free.

Good news when somebody takes the high road and willing to do the work to get better. My brother was in bad shape 35 years ago and took the positive steps to change his life. 35 years sober when I didn’t think he would last a year alive.
The amazing thing is the positive impact it had on others around him as several took the cue and got help as well. Don’t underestimate the number of people affected by your hard work.
I don’t know much about Husqvarna saws, but for some reason I’ve always thought they look great.

Probably the best part of this story is your willingness to make it public. By doing so you may have saved a life or 2 yourself. My hat's off to you! I quit smoking 25 years ago and found that to be the hardest thing I've ever done, I can't imagine your struggle. Well done!!:salute:

Thanks neighbor! The first thing I learned there was to be "honest" about everything. Keeping it out in the open has been a serious key to remembering how sick I was. Not going back there!

Great story here for sure! I will say as somebody who uses top handle saws for a living, I'd be much happier with the stihl ms201t. Guys who love the 540 really love them. Everyone else seems to hate them. Hot restart issues, and some have complained about durability.

Thanks! I have read that but............ the new T540XP II supposedly resolved the issues. The first version was garbage I hear. No matter. If it doesn't work we will put it in our first 20 yard concrete pour at the first of the year and head to the Stihl dealer. He is like me, absolutely refuses to attempt to work with a piece of faulty equipment.

I don’t mind the 540’s. They have good power and are pretty stout in build construction. While I would probably lean towards a 201t, I think it’s pretty much personal preference. Power and reliability are basically equal in my opinion. I have a t540 in a box I need to put back together and was thinking about keeping it for a backup. I still run 200t’s for my main climbing saw, but keep a 201t as a backup.
