Husqvarna 262xp start problem - Update

    Hey guys. Finally had a chance to work on the 262xp tonight. In an earlier thread I described a start problem. Since the flywheel key looked good after removal, I finally tried a coil replacement with a used coil I had. After re-assembly the saw with the new (used) coil and trying a start.........after two pulls the flywheel key sheared completely - no turn of the crankshaft while pulling on the recoil. Took flywheel back off and key was sitting on the crankcase. So.......good news I suppose......figured out what the problem must have been - bad flywheel. Will need to get another flywheel and I suppose the original coil was just fine. Does anyone have a flywheel for a 262xp that they might want to sell? I think a 261, 257, and 254 would work as well.

    KRedLeo - I know you had mentioned that you might have one - I'll pm you.

    The saga continues! Cutting a lot of trees lately and really miss using this saw :(

    Did you torque the flywheel correctly, 28NM?

    Hey Kred - I did not.....:(. But I tightened the nut down with a lot of torque and figured it would be fine for a quick try to start. I pulled twice and the key was gone. Could the key have been fine and sheared so easily on two pulls? I was guessing that the key was essentially sheared buy hadn't completely snapped from the flywheel. I'll certainly torque correctly from now on. damm. Cheers!

    28NM, if not it will shear off the key! If you assumed you had it ight enough, that is not good enough, I have had 372 flywheels shear the key in one pull if not torqued correctly. Once you bring it to torque, remove the torque wrench from the socket, then with the socket still on the flywheel nut, give the socket a sharp rap with a hammer then re-torque! Yes I do have another flywheel, it is the only one I have, so if you mess this one up your cooked! Follow HVA instructions to the letter!

    Argh.....didn't realize it would be so sensitive. I'll be very careful on the new one. Are you willing to sell one of yours, or do you only have the one extra and can't part with it.     The flywheel key is for timing positioning only, it has noting at allto do with holding he flywheel on the crank. Flywheel to crank joint is an interference fit and without the torque the flywheel will not hold. I'll send you a PM.
