Can be a bit of a pain when the rounds get bigger but splitting from the outside in has always granted me quite a bit of success.

I've split some small (12") Hemlock and it was easy, but I have never done any large.... Dries pretty quick and burns fast and hot.

I have hand split a few over the years. Splits pretty easy, but expect a lot of branches off the trunk so those are tougher. If its starting to rot (as some do), they can get punky and then fall apart when your splitting them.

the hemlock we have here is usually fairly big , I would say 20'" to 36"dia avg and usually has alot of knots where branches were. I found best way is to quarter them with wedges/sledges than split with hyd splitter, or set hyd splitter up vertically and split them. but that is kind of a pain at times getting larger rounds over to and set up in splitter, I've done it both ways. If straight grained a good maul or X27 will do the trick

Not to bad usually, just don't hit center with an axe or maul, couple inches in from the edge
    Straight grained?

Great guys. Thanks. Rounds from trunk are claimed to be 2.5' diameter and cut to 18" already. I will bring splitter with log lift to site.

Looks like it from far away. Did it go pretty quick for you? Can't imagine it'd give the splitter any trouble

Might be white pine but still, shouldn't give your splitter any trouble.

Well santa didnt have a real beard this year...
Those knots actually gave me a bit of a rough time. Took an hour to split everything pictured. Two more hours of cutting and splitting some half rotten willow and maple and there wasnt even two cords total. Sorry, dont get paid to take picks on-site.
Stopped by a coworkers place that was only fifteen minutes away. We put up a cord of locust in 45 minutes. Sorry, wife doesnt care if im late cuz i was taking pictures.

Not much of a picture. I was embarrassed that it took that long for me to get through. Yard tree with years of trimming i guess.
Def was not white pine. Pine knots give easier i would say.
