How will a modern insert heat with no electricity?

I'm doing some research on a modern insert and have a few questions. The main reason for installing an insert is if/when we lose power I'll still have a heat source. I still haven't ruled out a vintage Fisher insert. :)

    1. What kind of heat output will I get when the blower can't run?

    2. House is about 2000 sq ft with an open first living room that flows into the kitchen and an open mud room on the back side the the first living room. There's a second 400 sq ft media room that has double hung doors off the first living room too. Isolated master bedroom on one side and two other bedrooms and bath on the other side. Wondering on stove sizing here?
I'll post some pics when the bathroom remodel is finished and I can get everything put back into place. :(.:(

Thank you FHC this is a great site. ")

Without my blower I lose a lot of heat but it does work. If I load the box up full, without a blower it will start glowing on top.

Maybe consider a screen in the event of no power, keep the door open just burn more wood that way.

I'd be ok with a small gen set as that would power a stove blower.

A friend heats his shop with a free standing Country Flame insert. Even free standing, it doesn't produce much heat without the blower being double walled construction. Without the blower, the fire box will get so hot that the double doors will bind up and not want to open. Works good with the blower going and a box fan behind it.

I had a Clydesdale insert and without the blower I'd say it was pretty pathetic. If you're using an insert I'd think a small generator to run the blower would be best.

A 12 volt inverter is another option. Quieter and cheaper to buy/operate.

I picked up a used Country Flame with combuster a few years ago but never installed it, I bought a new honeycomb combustor, door seal etc and its just sitting in my shop, its needs two new fans.:(

You may not get great amounts of heat with no electricity, but I'll bet it is enough to keep things from freezing. I have freestanding stove and it works better with a floor fan behind it, but even with no fan it's a heat source to keep house and family warm.

The blower on my Buck draws 200W. I have a Diehard 750w inverter and a couple deep cycle batteries that I got for free. This setup could easily run the blower for hours as well as provide power for a light or two. Another option is to run the inverter off a car battery for a short time, but be ready to jump the car if you drain the battery too much. Without the blower, my house would likely cool down significantly.
This is the one I have.

All depends on the make/model and the house layout. I've used my Republic insert during power outages and it still puts out heat. But it's in a terrible location in a back corner of the house. Without the blower it takes a lot longer for the heat to move out of that back corner.

Good idea, and can be used inside at the stove.

Oh, I see; it is the fans that is keeping you from using the stove. You might can find suitable fans on ebay; you may not need exact replacements.

I'd look for a new hybrid from a reputable wood stove manufacturer

I ran a Regency I3100 from 2009-2016 and really liked it. I picked it up barely used on CL for $600. I think the liner cost me $900 so for $1500 I was all set. With high oil prices back then in a very poorly insulated house it paid for itself after the 1st winter in savings from not having to buy oil. I bought oil only 3xs (150 gallons each time) from 2010-2016.

My insert was pretty pathetic without the fans running. It was also a flush insert, and even in the front had an extra cast iron jacket over the little bit of face that was showing. An insert that sticks out onto the hearth will radiate more than a flush one. Then again mine struggled with the blowers fully on too. I was really surprised how much better the freestanding stove works with no blowers at all compared to the insert even with it's blowers going. Of course the Woodstock is about a cubic foot bigger firebox than my Jotul insert was. It's so nice sitting beside the stove with it completly silent. Wish I would have done the switch sooner but the ex wouldn't have wanted the big stove sticking way out. So I know you probably don't want to but I have to suggest putting a freestanding stove in there instead. Just my $0.02
