My wife just bought a new bath mat and like some other things we've purchased, it stinks? Any ideas on how to get rid of the stink other than tossing it or returning it.
I usually put in attaced garage attic. Has ridge vents so it is "open" to the outside. Give ut a few days or so.
Mike, we've done that also but it seems lately anything like that we can leave out a week and it still stinks to high Heaven. We'll probably return it. Just a cheap one anyway.
I copied this for you: "Remove more of the lingering odor by sprinkling baking soda over the surface of the vinyl, allowing it to sit for several hours or overnight. Dump the baking soda into the trash afterward, and then wipe the vinyl down with a damp cloth. Spritz equal parts vinegar and water over the vinyl to help remove even more of the odor from the outside of the vinyl product. Because the odor emanates from inside the vinyl as well, no amount of cleaning will permanently remove all of the smell. Over time, the vinyl off-gases less and less, so the odor will eventually dissipate." Dennis, If it was up to me. I would toss it. If that odor is offensive, then why put up with it. My wife can get one from Bed Bath and Beyond that doesn't stink and last a while. Maybe you can use that stinky mat somewhere in the garage to deter mice.
If its an amonia odor, I highly recommend an enzyme cleaner. Used one called Zout to remove cat pizz smell from plastic and wood parts of a shotgun stock. This after being vacuumed sealed in washing soda for a week only temporarily stopped the odor.
its on the list. Id return it and tell em to send it back to China.. When it comes to safety, dollar-store deals might not be a bargain after all. Recent testing of their products found that 81% contained one or more hazardous chemicals. The tests, conducted by the consumer testing group Healthy Stuff, found chemicals associated with cancer, obesity, diabetes, asthma, thyroid and kidney diseases, learning problems, lower IQ, birth defects and early puberty. Cheap or not and regardless of where it was purchased, I only keep the things that I like, especially how it smells!! My vote is toss it or return it
Checked with wife. She had left this mat outdoors for 2 days. Did no good. Yesterday she scrubbed it with a weak bleach water solution. It worked so I guess we won't be returning it but for sure we'll not make any purchases like that again.
