I recently split about 6+ cords of ash, maple, hickory, cherry, and pine.

The pile still smells pungent after two weeks. Especially the hickory...smells like manure.

I'm guessing in a month the odor will be gone after the summer heat and sun begin to dry them a bit.

I can't get over how bad hickory smells. Oak can be pretty pungent, but the manure smell of hickory takes the cake.

What kind of hickory smells like manure?
My shag hickory is strongly scented, but not in the way of poop... I kinda like it- pecan emits a scent similar to hickory... So I guess my backyard smells like manure:whistle:
The next question is, " what's on yer upper lip?" Firewood Bandit :picard::rofl: :whistle::wacky:
    Just kidding, man!

The quaking aspen will stink for a day or two, but otherwise, my stacks smell nice when they smell at all.

I think the worst is cotton wood and willow, not my first choices on any list but if is ready and easy I'm not going to let it just sit there and rot!

I will take a pic in the morning. The center of this wood is very deep red almost maroon in color. The edge of the splits are very light brown. When I first split it, I was convinced I had stepped in animal doo until I picked up the split and took a whif. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it smells like manure.

I don't think it is shagbark. The bark is not flaking off.

Thing is...I'm limited on space and people keep wanting to bring me more wood. I know, there are worse problems. :p

They're so cute when they take naps.
That looks like a young one, the mature Richardson's are lighter in color, but still brownish.
Kill them. Kill them with fire if you have to. Gophers on steroids, and they carry disease. Bubonic Plague in the Central Valley, Calif., them critters are rife with it.
Flea bitten, nasty, chirping rotten rodents. Kill them all.

You are absolutely right! and that's a FACT. Now I really feel justified about killing them.:D
