I have read on this forum the benefits of quicker seasoning when the black locust bark comes off. I have scene this benefit first hand and it dramatically helps with seasoning.

On fresh cut BL is there a trick to get the bark off?

On the older cut BL the bark comes off easily.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If it’s a option let it sit a year or so. It peals off easy then. Just did some yesterday.

Nope. Gotta let it sit and get some time on it.

Use a draw shave but that’s a lot of work for firewood.

I never try to take bark off BL when cut green or if bark is tight. Leave rounds/splits to weather a few months and itll loosen. If you must this might work. I use it when bark is loose enough. Fiskars product.
Note: that is a barkless dead black locust round. IMG_0332.JPG IMG_0331.JPG

So last year I made some split rail fencing from some fresh black locust. The best I could do was use a pry bar and a hammer to get underneath it and it came off in huge sheets... I got real good at it and it was only a couple minutes per 8 foot log. It has to be extremely fresh cut though. I'm talking like cut that day or the day before. Also that was the middle of the summer so the slippery stuff was really flowing... but I'd wait a year if I had it to wait.

Just give it the 2 years it requires…It’s a no brainer from here in WV-20% or less, then it’s time…

Why not just split it all? Same effect as removing the bark…and you’re going to have to do that sooner or later anyway —plus you’ll get to keep all the BTUs in the bark.
