How close can my wood be?

How far away should I keep the wood away from the glass door on my insert? The inside of the box is 18 inches deep except in the middle where the air inlet box is.

 

I keep wood a couple of inches away from the glass on my wood stove.

 

If your firebox is 18" deep, then I'd not cut any longer than 17". Stoves seem to do best with a little gap at the front and the back.

As long as it's not hitting the glass, you are good. That's the main point.

 

Is it ok if it lays on top of the air inlet box? Or should keep it to the sides?

 

That shouldn't matter, just so that the wood is clear of the door. Also, the closer you put the wood by the door, there's more chance of getting dark marks on the glass. Also, there's more chance of having ashes fall out when you open the door.

What insert do you have?

 

It's a country flame E1. We just bought the house in August and have never had a fireplace or stove in my life so I'm trying to learn all I can to do it right and efficiently. It's not our primary heat source, I'm just gonna use it to offset the cost of propane.

 

Is this an EPA tube stove/ insert? Does it have a Chimney liner? I'm not familiar with this insert.

 

It's a cat insert, late 90's early 2000's and it does have a liner.

 

The person that owned the home and had it installed was adamant about keeping paper work so I have the manual and installed receipt for it. I happened to have the same guy that installed it come clean and inspect. I asked him if for any reason I may need to buy a different insert in the near future and he said definitely not, this is good one and that the newer have a lot smaller fire boxes.

 

Welcome to the club Patrick MO! I agree with Chvymn99 here. Plus at 16" you can stack 3 rows deep on a 48" pallet

yeah, what he said. Just make sure you dont accidentally close the door on your wood.

 

Sounds like you should be cutting at 16/17 so that a couple pieces cut a tiny bit long or crooked will be NBFD.
As long as you're not closing the door on an oddball long piece that shouldn't be a problem, you just wouldn't want them all to be that long as that is begging for a slip up.

I have a gauge on the wood bin and wood rack to test anything that looks a bit long.
I also have to sort shorter pieces out for one stove that the max is 16" ( more like 16-1/2")

I was cutting with a group so we've had a lot of variance in split length.
When you're cutting in bulk with a lot of people you don't nit pick, you work with what you've got.

 

That's a general rule of life.
