So, had the "Talk" with my boss today. Semi-productive. But he agreed to my wage increase- but was going to "salary" vs. my current hourly wage. So I'm crunching the numbers, as I'll be the only one I'm aware of to be on a salary. I've not signed anything, but it doesn't seem right.
I have to qualify my requirements I'm sure, but still....
How would you make the distinction?
Gotta admit, I've never had to negotiate a pay increase, it feels ....odd to me. Uncommon ground.

Ask me about my ROI and pay scales, I'm covered..

Be careful.............. if he gets you on salary does that mean he gets to enslave you further. I smell alterior motives on his part. Don't lose sight of the big picture because of a few $$$$$, they may come at a bigger price than you bargained for. Remember, boss's are like diapers. They are always on your a$$ and generally full of Chit.

Salary can be a slippery slope...seems like many times salaried folks get ridden like the rented mule that they are...what's in it for you? If you work a lot of hours it seems to me that there has to be some compensation to reflect such...we are only given so many days/hours on this green n blue ball...

 :rofl: ... Run forest run... :hair::hair: Salary there are a variety of it... most of it is geared to the employer... very few is actually geared to the employee... Just make sure your getting compensated enough so that when you look at your hours of work vs your pay, your not in the McDonalds payrate at the end of the day....

Hey I do not know specific info but I have worked both and it depends on employer and job I worked for a landscape co. as a mechanic /operator on salary and had a great boss during spring /fall busy times I worked sometimes 90hr weeks but any hours over 60 I was paid cash overtime and we shut down december 15 and started march 1 I was the only one kept on pay all winter and if weather sucked I did not even have to come in we did not do snow removal so I guess it all depends on your situation Good Luck JB

It can go either way depending on the boss and place of employment. I have been salary on 3 different jobs since 1990, hourly prior to that.

salary, anything over 40 is free for the company. YOU will always be picked to work over/weekends. Very rarely works out in YOUR favor.
IMO unless you are making 20k more than you were it is a losing proposition.

You can always negotiate what salary means, like you work 50 hours a week max then you start getting overtime or you then become an hourly employees (which gets you overtime).

I'm salaried plus commission. I'm a salesman, so it's long hours sometimes if things are busy. I'm home based, so I will often find myself sitting at the desk before 5am, or at 9pm. However, it all comes out in the wash. I dont feel bad when I put in a solid 3 hours in a day before calling it occasionally.

Not sure I'd want to be salaried if I had the potential to have to work 8+ ot often.

Exactly. Many times "salaried employee" or exempt employee, just means they can ride you all day, longer that the 8 hrs a day you expect and not pay you any more. If the boss has verbiage about bonuses in your offer, that's great, but will they pay them when those milestones/ points are met?

I've had that happen, " performance bonuses" for when a company hits a certain percentage of you name it. Sadly, many times those figures that need to be hit can be cleverly erased or jusssst not quiiiiiite there by accounting or any other data point being massaged to not be there yet.

Great idea. I'll keep that in my back pocket. At bare minimum it sets the tone that you expect there can be days you work more than 8 hrs, but that more than 50 hrs/ week they need to back off, or pay up.

Oh, that sounds familiar. Potential, no it's the norm.

I'm on salary. Every place I've worked they have expected you to work until the work is done - meaning even if my work is done, it isn't really done because my boss has a project that needs to be done immediately. There were times I was on hourly that salary people were complaining because I made more than them (I put in plenty of OT - but I don't know what hours they put in). A couple of places, I was on the salary side making less than the hourly people but putting in the same hours (discouraging when you come in before they do, and leave after they do).

My current place of employment gave me a really nice raise, so I don't mind the long hours so much as I did the last place I worked.

I've worked both and found that salary worked out good for us. Only one place where they always wanted more hours once you got salaried. However, my salary took that into consideration so I got more. I've never worked at a place where hourly paid more than salaried. Also I found that most of the negative talk about salary came from those who were not on salary...

Thanks for all of the input. I'm not certain which direction I'm gonna go on this. I started crunching numbers last night for this year and projecting to the end of the year. I'm not finished yet, but the salary rate would be greater than my combined hourly + OT so far. I'm not too concerned about an increased work load, I put more pressure on myself to complete my projects than the boss ever has.
My internet has been really spotty this past week so I'll get back on as soon as I can, not even sure if this will post.

    Good luck Beetle-Kill

I only worked salary once. (Aside from military)

Did not enjoy the experience. Was IT admin for a small company. I enjoyed the job, but we sent out a newsletter every month and I was responsible for printing the mailing labels and addressing the newsletters.

It wasn't uncommon for me to go in @ 8 AM and go home for a quick dinner, then back to babysit the label printer till 10 PM or later.

But.. When I asked for a day off to take care of some family matters, was told I'd be docked for the day.
    :eek::faint::mad::mad:

I came a bit unglued and mentioned the 30+ hours I had been working without compensation because of a major server upgrade that was appropriately scheduled on the weekend, was told "You're salary, there's no compensation for OT."

I did get paid for the day, but left there at the first opportunity.

Just started a salary job about 5 months ago...So far it has been great. Doesn't seem like the company would ever ask me to work a ridiculous schedule. I believe in a fair days wage for a fair days pay! I also whether hourly or salary put in more than an 8 hour day (Without charging on hourly job). I do a lot of internetting and Bullchitting during my 8 hours and believe I owe the company a little!

Don't forget, with extra income sometimes comes a new higher tax bracket.

I was offered a job once with the option of hourly/salary. I knew the hours that would be worked, went hourly because if I was working, I was getting paid, if I was off, he didn't have to pay. Just my thought. Where I work now, they have both. I see my bosses leaving late and working weekends, but don't know what their pay is.
