I posted a while back for a tree identification and there was much debate. But the verdict is in and I have 4 hickory trees that of course extend over my driveway. Recently just got a new car and all I hear is it getting pinged by hickory nuts.

I hate to cut healthy trees down but I may just lose a few hickory trees here in the near future. Only down side is not sure if I can handle them myself. Some lean over my shed while others are not as menacing but still would most likely have to be pieced down.

Those two trees are both hickory. I already cut a overhanging branch off the one for fear of it falling on the cars during storms/winter.

good for squirrels not good for my cars.

I like trees, but not when they threaten my stuff. Then they go in the stove.

Agreed, trees need to go. Despite being healthy and being there first they are threatening the car and shed. Feel better and plant a couple when those are down.

Hickories don't fall as often as a lot of other stuff here, but those are pretty close from the looks of it...

Sounds like when all the acorns & hickory nuts hit the roof on parents little house. They put a standing seam metal roof on it in 2007,the noise is quite loud if you're outside within 100 ft or so....Thankfully its not audible inside the house.
Looks good though,no more maintenance & should last 25 years easily.

I've been an avid outdoorsman for years, love the wilderness. Peeps are always impressed with my knowledge of deciduous forest flora and fauna.

However, I have been ruthless in removing trees from around my home, there simply ain't gonna be a tree land on my place, can't happen now, unless a tornado rips one out and puts it there!

I can't recall the number of times I've read about a tree landing on a home, not to mention the number of times I've seen it, along with trees landing on cars too. There was one a year ago or so on my way to work, tree slammed smack dab into the roof of the guys car, sitting in his driveway.o_O I ain't puttin' up with that crap.

I say cut 'em down, protect your property.

If I was to do that, I would have firewood for the next 10 years. House is surrounded by trees on every side. Just have to assess the most problematic and dispatch of those.

100% right there! Not to mention the better air flow around the house. When were in the shade, we had mold and green stuff growing on about everything. We fist cut them so we had a 20 ft strip around the house. ( oak and maple) After a couple hurricanes with tree falling around us, we took most of everything down that could fall and damage the house. We now have done the same for the garage. Much lighter in the house now. More air movement and not damp. There are still many trees. I don't miss any of them.

Get a smoker and cook some meat, that'll help you go through it quicker..... Both you and your insurance company will that you for the removal.

I hate to kill trees (you'd never have guessed that!!), but when they are threatening trees then you gotta do what you gotta do. Sad thing about hickory is that they take so long to grow...A tree that size took a long time to get that size.

On the bright side, no more dings in your hood and roof, and some of the bestest most premium firewood/cooking wood/smoker wood you can ask for!!
