Ive got one of the homelite 5 ton electric splitters and Im going to have to add some more fluid to it tomorrow. The dipstick has fallen off in the reservoir and iI lost a bit of fluid trying to get it out some Im going to just dump it all and try to get the stick back out my question is what kind of hydraulic fluid should I put back in? Ive lost the manual and the only thing Lowes had was AW-32 hydraulic oil the jug says it mixes safely with original fluids but before I dump this stuff in I just wanted to be sure that it would be good for the splitter.
http://manuals.homelite.com/documents/1615 I'm surprised but the manual doesn't mention what type of fluid to use. Not that I saw anyways. AW32 is a good all-purpose fluid and should not present any compatibility issues. Universal Tractor Hydraulic fluid and automatic transmission fluid are also generally acceptable.
Thanks Master Mech I found a copy of the manual online and couldnt find anything about what type of oil to use. I just wanted to check cause I dont know anything about this stuff and would hate to screw it up with the wrong type of oil.
There is a standard "hydraulic jack" oil sold by the quart for use in bottle jacks. The AW-32 or 46 will work fine.
I would just use transmission fluid if I don't have any hydro fluid around, for no more than you will need.
The AW-32 seems to have worked just fine I drained out all of the fluid that was in the splitter and still couldnt find the dipstick I dont know what happened to it so I just kind of guessed at how much fluid to put in. The manual says it holds 3.7 quarts and I have a gallon jug of oil so I put around 3/4 of the jug in and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for the advice guys
Yeah I was guessing at it I meant to say I used a little over 3/4 of a gallon. It was all just rough guessing since I cant find the dipstick anywhere. I wonder what would happen if I put in to much?
That shouldnt be a problem then right it sounds like your saying it will just blow off the excess and sort of self regulate itself?
Basically. I'm sure there is some technical reason but yes it will just push out the vent when the cylinder pushes the fluid out of it to the reservoir. My buddy overfilled his gas splitter and as he was using it with me it just flowed out of the vent. Yes u want air space in their but really I think it is so that it will not puke fluid everywhere. No one wants something that leaks all over the place so the fluid level is set for that.
On my old electric 4 ton I used this oil http://www.harborfreight.com/15-oz-hydraulic-and-jack-oil-40709.html it ran just fine on it.
