This gnarly box elder tree in our grove was getting pretty dangerous. It split a couple years ago and the standing side was hollow at the bottom with only about 2” of decent wood 3/4 the way around. So instead of killing this newbie woodcutter we just made a campfire inside and let it fall peacefully in the night. In the morning we checked and it was impressive how far it held on before it fell. Base is probably 30”.
Youre supposed to cut it down first then burn it! A felling technique ive never seen. Probably killed all the ants inside too. Will you harvest the rest for firewood Phil121 ?
Yep I’m not too picky since we have two houses with wood stoves. My father in law likes to keep his little house about 80*+ . I’m also trying to get on the two year plan so everything cut is going in the corn crib to dry
Wonder if it helped dry it some? Boiled off some of the moisture??? Was there any noticeable sizzling/steaming anywhere?
I've got a box elder down by the creek just like that. I think I'll give your felling technique a try!
It was mostly dead to begin with so it didn’t sizzle too much. From the looks of it the fire stayed inside the hollow part and didn’t climb the rest of the tree
That was a great way of dealing with the facts at hand and coming up with a safe way to get it done. Whatever works,
