So being laid off I get to do housework not just firewood stuff. I do brush and shake off after cutting.. So doing laundry today I found a bunch of sawdust in the washer and some found in the dryer lintscreen. Anyone else have this issue? Or upset their SO with sawdust in the house
My wife doesn’t care. She knows firewood is what I do whenever I can. I have to wear my boots in the house too, because of pf in both feet, but I clean up after myself. If there’s not chips in my pockets, something bad has happened.
For sure! You should see my floor mat by the front door. (Kinda a weird layout in this house. That's where i take off my shoes and coats.) Its covered in saw chips and debris most of the time. I try to make a point of dumping out pockets there and stripping clothes off if it was a windy day. I figure it's better than mud or cow/animal stuff.
No, she loves the wood heat and doesn't mind the mess it sometimes makes. I'm pretty good at cleaning myself off though so not a whole lot comes into the house.
Its a constant. There's almost always some sawdust in the foyer from my boots. Im pretty mind full (from experience) to brush off pants and turn pockets inside out before i come inside. I change in the laundry room downstairs. I get a lot in my sweatshirts waist pocket. That hasnt been washed all Winter. I do my own laundry so any chips get wiped out of the machine. I hate getting them out of my socks. Ive been known to take my boots and socks off at a cut in the dead of winter to get the chips out! Bugs the heck out of me when the pant leg catches and a good spray of chips goes into my boots.
The sharper your chain is, he worse the chips are. Oak drives me mad with all the little needles it makes. I can pick my socks clean and still get poked when I wear the after they get washed. They get in my shoes too.
Tall boots and long pants keep the chips out of the boots. I usually blow my clothes out with shop air to keep the chips somewhat out of the laundry.
I just can't stand being bound up or hot. I try to wear long pants when it's cool out, but shorts are a must in the summer. Have to be careful then, because one wrong cut and you blow your underwear full of chips.
I try to brush off as best i can, often strip down out on the porch if I'm really dirty, but a little finds it's way into the house sometimes. Can't imagine running a saw in shorts. Jeans and chaps. I don't cut in the summer unless I have to.....working on fence or storm damage and have to do it then for some reason.
Have lived all these issues. All my cutting pants have zippered pockets now and I wear gator leggings to keep the chips out of my boots. My cutting chaps add another layer of protection. I also spray permethrin on all this attire to keep ticks and chiggers from eating me alive. I also cut off the ends of old socks to put over the cuffs of my gloves to keep chips out. I am always trying to solve problems associated with cutting firewood.
Hmnn, guess I’m different than everyone else. Go figure LOL Got in this habit rebuilding my mothers house. using old work clothes and not washing them. Threw them out when they were covered with tile thinset or paint. I keep a pair of work pants and insulated shirt for work. I don’t wash them for months at a time. Because I don’t kneel or work in the mud they stay fairly clean besides the sawdust in the pockets. Come summer that habit will have to die but during winters that’s how I roll.
I usually blow my saws off with the air compressor before bringing them in, and then blow myself (don't go there) off before coming in, but I always seem to find some either on the bathroom floor or in the washing machine.
I love this thread I have weird OCD about this. I always strip down to my boxer briefs on our second story deck - even in cold weather. I turn all pockets inside out and shake all my clothes vigorously, before going inside. I get an odd sense of satisfaction by watching the wind take the dust and chips off into the trees.
The pockets collect it real bad. I stopped at the store on my way home from cutting a load of wood and ended up dumping a pile of chips on the floor by the register when I pulled my hand out of my pocket. Nobody knew what to say.
Sorry to hear about the work but no doubt SO digs helping with household chores. Ask her As a wife, never been an issue, except for a fleece throw blanket and hoodie with popcorn texture that can be replaced but the wood and husbands desire to process it cannot be replaced. No issues with washing machines, old 8 gallon agitators nor new front loaders. Dryers, everyone has to scrape the lint screen anyway.
I'd venture to say you aren't a true hoarder if you don't have some saw dust/wood chip in your pockets. Nature of the game.
I try to make sure my pants are covering the top of my work boots...I hate when they get caught/bunched up and I don't notice, allowing my boots to fill up with chips...usually too late by the time you notice, and I hate how hard it is to brush/pick all those chips off my socks! The last time it happened I was cutting oak and the chips seemed to stick like Velcro! I often grab the lint wads that come out of the dryer for fire starter...many times there are saw chips in it.
I always blow off my overalls, pockets and jackets with the shop compressor. I don't like having wood chips in the metal shop so I do vacuum up often. Fortunately, since I cut a lot of Doug Fir, the sap keeps the chips sticking to the cloth and not too much gets blown away. Eventually, when I look like an immense butterfly shrimp covered with Panko, I have to bite the bullet and do a dedicated firewood clothing wash!
