Just wondering if anyone has a feel for this. I bought two new rear tires for my eXmark 50hp mower that would not hold air due to dry rot. Got ten years out of them, maybe that's ok, lol. I took them to a 'service station' in a nearby small town that fixes flats, among other things. I asked 'How much to put these tires on?' Answer was $10 each. Let's do it. Then at the end the guy says do you want new valve stems, which he recommended, so, I did it. I go to pay up and the clerk said it's $12/each for the valve stem. Does that seem right? Valve stems are not expensive. That seems way high to me but I'm open, lol. Granted, they did install them but it took very little time. I did think mounting the tires was sure worth $10/each. Just curious because I have several other tires on other stuff that needs some help and I need a good place to fix them. I'm just wondering is this normal, lol. (To clarify, total cost of installing each tire with new valve stem was $22/each.)
Maybe the clerk made a mistake? Did you ask why something that should cost a couple bucks at the most cost 12?
I did. It was a woman. Thinking she might be the owner. She just said something like "Yep, $12." I am going back to say something and will do it cordially but if I feel like it's a rip, I will not go back, and I actually like this place, it's an old timey like 'service station.' I asked a worker there "If I pull up to that pump that says "Full Service," would you pump my gas? He said they will do it for customers they know. They also have a self serve pump. They fix flats, oil changes, washes, do brakes, wheel alignment, state inspection/sticker, minor repairs. I was going to give them some business down the way but they'll lose me if it's a rip. And I will matter-of-factly tell her that. EDIT: I also saw the worker perusing a pricelist that was taped to their main window and I did not look closely but I believe it DID say $12 for a valve stem. I'll know when I go back! Also, whomever asked... they are not steel, just regular rubber valve stem.
Huh, inflation is real! I think I’d call or have someone else call and ask what they charge for lawnmower tire mount with new valve stem just to see what they say. That thing should be made of gold for 12$.
I put these on my motorcycles and they are about $10-15each. But if it's just a standard rubber one like my pic above, those are a dime a dozen (so to speak).
Here's a little FYI for ya all. I replaced one of those rubber valve stems from the top side and never had trouble with it....ever! A little dawn dish soap and water, worked it in a circular motion and was surprised that it was successful! I can't remember if it was clockwise or counter clockwise though....maybe find out first!
If you can afford a 50 hp exmark those valve stems were pocket change! 96 inch diesel runs about $45k and it’s no where near 50 horse.
https://www.thepricer.org/tire-valve-stem-replacement-cost/ I guess I should charge more. I would not change a tire without doing the stem as well, cuz if it leaks I’ll have to hear about it and fix it and you definitely don’t make anything the second time around.
I take it it was the valve stem you were working in a circular motion with soapy palms ???? Just asking for a friend .......
I didn’t even know what and exmark is but… wth is a 50HP mower? I’ve hear of going tool time on a machine…
