in Southeast Connecticut here. I’ve been away from Connecticut for a couple of months. I’m noticing on my first day back in the woods to hike my dogs that the Hickory trees all seem to have pretty wilty leaves with a lot of brown dead color in them. I was just curious if other folks in the area are seeing the same thing. Hoping it’s not another tree disease that’s gonna impact yet another of our tree species.
Haven’t noticed anything on the hickory’s, not many around here anyway. Noticed the Tulips dropped quite a few leaves already. Seemed odd.
I think the heat and lack of rain is causing the trees to start dropping leaves. I noticed the Tulip Poplar and Red Maple doing it here.
Cant say I've noticed. Not a lot of hickories I pass, but I would more than likely see an affected tree. Could it be from the dry spell that's hit us I wonder? I have noticed the minimal foliage from the beeches. Still hanging on but a sad sight. It would be REALLY sad if a disease got to the hickories.
We have several large Shagbark trees and their leaves seem normal for this time of year. We have a couple Basswoods that seems to be turning early and fast.
I've noticed that several Hickorys are turning yellowish brown I our area. Poplar and Walnuts are shedding leaves and the gum trees are turning red.
I have noticed this thing about leaf turning and some dropping. Seems almost everyone comes up with the same theory about dry and lack of rain and sometimes even heat. I have noticed every year there is early lead turning and some dropping. I think it is normal. We just returned from the north country and yes, leaf turning color is starting. However, I expected this. I also remember when we lived in the northern peninsula a few years there were certain areas where red maples turned red in middle to late July. When it happens year after year it is normal.
Thanks all. After seeing the ash tree and now the beech tree problems, I got a little nervous after seeing those hickory trees.
We had some abnormally cool nights not usually seen in August. Maybe that was enough to confuse them. The one in my front yard
In last day or two, I’ve been noticing multiple tree species with leaves that look tired from the lack of rain.
A nice pignut in my mom’s yard suddenly lost its leaves last year practically in one day! Her neighbor had lost a chestnut oak earlier in the week to oak wilt. I guess the wilt can get other species? Haven’t studied on it, so a low certainty assumption.
I read or heard somewhere that foliage in the current year is responding to weather from the previous year FWIW.
