It is a Butternut tree that snapped during a wind storm this past Spring. I don't know how it will burn but I will cut it up as soon as it comes down to my level.
Do you have a rope and a truck or tractor? Personally I wouldn’t be able to leave that up there... too paranoid that someone would walk under it... depends on where it is of course..
I don't know anything about Butternut, But I have a bunch of Bitternut. It's heavy and dense and burns like the dickens. If you take the widowmaker down use a lot of care.
Butternut is a species of walnut, not the greatest heat output. But it has to come down so you may as well put it to work for you. I believe the is some sort of blight killing off the butternut trees. And my 40" butternut has it! On the plus side, once it's down, the garden will have more sun and I'll have a good spot for my little pond.
Not many left, at least here in ct. state used to tag them and keep track of the live ones years ago. Had one we took down in 2008. Have one more that’s still kicking but not very happy. Nothing great to burn but burn it will.
It burns, but not great like oak or maple. The pitch smells pretty bad when you are splitting. If you are not comfortable cutting it as it stands, you can always use come along etc. I am not advocating unsafe behavior, but a 360 walk around to see how it is loaded will help. Good luck.
