That skidderoon looks kinda cool but I have to think that the cable will get caught on stuff.

I'm not a fan of my log rite. I much prefer my Council. Never seen a Dixie.

Great, another thing I'm going to have to buy. This stove, chainsaws, and tools will be paid for in another 10 years. Lol

Their website states that the cable removes in seconds. Sure looks like it makes dragging limbs easier.

It's an older book. Not very large...maybe 16 pages. They make tongs, cant hooks, peavys, etc. We used to stock their cant hooks...very stout. There are a bunch of these type books at work...which can be a good thing or a bad thing for me.

That's the first time I've seen someone not like the Logrite. Can you elaborate?

Tools are an investment towards self sufficiency. I use this reasoning to justify many of my purchases! :D

The hookaroons I made from conduit work good, but I much prefer my Peavy Hume head Hookeroon with Wood handle

The Hume is on my shortlist. The gadget lover in me still wants the Skidderoon! :)

Someone got one of those and said they really like it, and liked it for the brush grabber dragging brush around, don't remember who it was.
For dragging small logs around I use the 12" log tongs

Well, went ahead and put a Dixie 1lb Hume head with 18" handle on order at work today. We'll see what $32 buys in a week or two. Meanwhile, I have a Skidderoon in my Bailey's shopping cart...

I'm already there. Got an 8 pin, some flippy caps, wedge, chain catch and a few other items in the cart as well. I know I'm forgetting something I need.

RCBS I find that the point on my Logrite is too round instead of flattened and doesn't have the nice curve of the Council. Also, I like the longer wooden handle of the Council with the knob at the end vs. the shorter, straight, aluminum of the Logrite. This makes the Council much more ergonomical. I can reach farther with the longer handle, the point penetrates and holds better when I want it to and releases easier when I want it to. I spent 4 hours today moving and splitting some oak rounds and put the Council to a great workout and it performed flawlessly. Oh yeah, the Council is cheaper. I think the Logrite is designed more for "reaching into or across machines" (lumber mills) than for general firewoodin'.

Thanks for the advice! I think I have ruled out the Logrite due to no reference for index on the tip. When you grab a round handle there is no front or back like an axe handle. The Skidderoon has a small "trigger" that can be used to index. Sappie is what I really want, but dang they are expensive.

What type of head is on your council?

What length do you guys think would be good for a guy who is 6'6"? One of the selling points is that it prevents a lot of unnecessary bending. I'd want to be able to hook something on the ground and not have to bend.

I've got the 15" and a 30" Katahdin from Peavey. Great tools, won't ever be without a hookaroon/pickaroon type tool again. I've even got to the point I use the 15" one carrying wood from the wood room to the stove.

Now a want a 48" pickaroon for reaching farther into the truck/trailer.

Probably the 36", I'm 5-8 and the 30" works great for me.
