Hello to all, I'm a new member and found these forums while trying to identify some wood I was given via google. Could anyone help me identify this stuff? I'm new to the firewood game! Thanks in advance!
Welcome! Glad you found us. Not sure on the wood, one of the elders will know soon though. Looks like cherry on inside but bark is way way off. Never came across anything that looked like that in my short hoarding career. Also, see your in SC so I'm sure it's something that doesn't grow up here in the northeast. I see a lot of coniferous needles laying around. Love SC. I have relatives in Mt. Pleasant and try to get there as much as possible.
Yes, I usually just take downed oaks from my dads property here. I'm just outside Charleston in Summerville. This tree and a couple of white oaks fell on some property here during hurricane Matthew, and the landowner gave it all to me.
My relatives lived in Summerville through the 80's and 90's before moving to Mt. Pleasant. They had a huge pine come through their house during Hugo. Both my cousins went to Summerville high, they're 41 and 38. I spent a lot of time there also. Funny...
Hey Michael henderson , welcome aboard. No help on the firewood, but it's nice to see you're gettin' a good start on it.
I was only 7 when Hugo came through. Never really understood the concern on my parents face until Matthew, while we waited it out with my own little boys. The pines in my yard were swaying and crackling, but they all stayed up. I did have a heap of branches to cut up and burn though.
Thanks papadave! I've been cutting and splitting for a few months now. Trying to offset the Christmas costs and have a nice stockpile for my outside pit. My father had several oaks come down on his place, so he and I fired up saws, broke out splitting axes, and had some father-son bonding time. I was using an 8lb Collins, he bought a fiskars splitting axe. I swung it once, and went and bought one myself.
Was looking at Collins mauls today at the local Ace. I just gave my firewood guy an old Sears 6lb maul head. He seemed pleased, but doubt he'll use such a puny thing. He's 6'5".
I bought a Fiskars 36in splitting axe, it's nothing short of awesome! Way lighter and a lot of one strike splits. The Collins still has a place in my arsenal though!
Welcome Michael. I want to identify everything as ash but that would just be wrong for your stuff. Sorry but I don't know.
one on the right is cherry I'd say....stuff on the left ?? far left end looks like maple but from there I'm leaning toward a type of sycamore
Welcome aboard Michael henderson Im glad you found us! Theres a great bunch of folks here that love talking about axes, chainsaws and firewood. You want to talk all things firewood then youve come to the right place.
Nice to meet you Michael henderson , I'd have to agree with Locust Post on the Cherry on the right pic. I don't recognize the logs on the left. Someone will though.
I agree that the one is a fruit tree. Can't see the bark well enough on the others. Welcome to the club!
Welcome to the forum Mikael. You have some wood there that we do not have here. But if clemsonfor comes on he should be able to identify it.
Well it's a good thing ya found us Michael henderson, even if we can't ID the wood on the left.... Right pic is def Cherry. Judging by those hugely spaced rings in the log to the far most left, that one almost looks like Bradford Pear, but I've not seen them pecked to death like some of the other logs. A close up pic or two of a fresh split and closer end grain shot might lend itself to a successful ID.
