Just an fyi, watch yourself in the heat and take it seriously. I'm typing and trying to get rid of some nervous stress right now as I stand watch. When I came home I almost instantly knew something was off about my wife, but she insisted that she was fine. Shortly she really was not herself. She sat down a minute and then stumbled to the bathroom and got sick, bad! I instantly was wetting cold towels and placing them on her, barley put them on and they were hot. Cranked the a/c, and went to get a fan on her. While I stepped out she tried to make it to the livingroom. When I got there I was just in time to catch her as she lost her balance. Sat her down and continued to cold towel her off. She finally cooled enough to rest and fell asleep. A couple hours later she was up snd had a glass of water with a pinch of pink salt to replace electrolytes, but got sick again. Have been getting her to sip water again and resting in a/c for a few more hours but still doesn't feel good. I will be spending the night near her as she doesn't want to come upstairs incase a nausea spell hits again. Very scary how quickly she deteriorated and am glad I was there. Please watch yourself and others. I really dont know what would have happened if I hadn't been there.
That is indeed scary. I hope she has recovered. Thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder to mind how your body feels. If it's trying to tell you something, listen.
Yep the heat can do wicked things to your body... and once you get it, your more prone to doing it again... at least I am... the last time I did it on July 5th on a Sunday.... it took till Tuesday to feel human again... Hopefully she's keeping fluids down... If not get her to the ER... where they'll IV her for hydration...
Having done this myself in the summer of 2000 I'd recommend at least calling the Dr.. On hot and humid days I still get nauseous and throbbing headaches.
Real unsettled night, but she is doing better. Feeling wiped out, sipping fluids, exhausted, and no appetite. She won't do a sports drink that I think would really help. I'm telling her to take it easy but she feels like she needs to just snap out of it. Heading to work in 10 minutes and worrying about leaving her. Thanks for the thoughts.
pedalyte ... I bought some aloe Vera drink... it’s got Electrolytes in it too... a little salt to your water will maintain some water too...
If she will have her drink pickle juice. It is better and works faster than most sport drinks. Yes i know sounds stupid but when Lou Holts coached the Gamecocks in South Carolina he swore by it and it does work.
When I was replacing the roof a few years back in 95ºF weather I found trying to read something was a decent test for getting far too hot. If I couldn't make sense of what I was reading I was done for the day or at least until the roof was in the shade much later in the day. It's like hypoglycemia and surely some other things where you think you're fine but you absolutely need and should heed a more objective opinion of the possible shape you're in.
Couple days of sitting at the lake, in the shade, haven't went out on the dock to be in the sun even, and today she finally is herself again. Kinda scared me for a little bit, but she is better now. From my past overheating experiences, I will be keeping a close eye on her condition for a while though. It seems when I have had heat issues I tend for a few weeks to easily relapse into another bout of it, so my guard will be up for a while with her. Thanks again for the thoughts and tips! You guys are what make this place the best site on the interweb!
I'm so sorry to hear this! How is she today? Honestly on a scale that sounds closer to heat stroke than heat exhaustion, but I'm just so happy you were there for her! What was she up to outside in the heat (and I assume sun)? edit, I see we posted at the same time, thank you for updating us Oh, and pedalite for kids comes in fruit flavors to add to Chvymn99 's comment.
Last night she had another bout but not as severe. Better today. Starting to wonder though... Is it possible to not over heat so much as I was out just as much and didn't think it should have been that bad, but can just an overdose of sun get you like this? She made a couple comments that the light was getting to her.
She has rheumatoid arthritis iirc? There are a couple sister diseases to RA, and one in particular, lupus has high sun sensitivity. I have a different sister disease in the same family and both sun and heat take a toll on me quickly. I cannot recall if Sjogrens does or not but it often follows any of the above rheumatics. Although all of them have the same root cause and overlapping symptoms... Sun hat or available shade, cool clothes, lots of water, and time the amount of heat & sun exposure is what I try to do. Though I just failed in June, our kids schoolmates played with sidewalk chalk on the school patio. Complained to XXL and Loon (thanks guys )
She might have Vertigo, i had exactly the same symptoms , i couldn't stand any kind of a light on, my balance was really bad, and i would get sick to my stomach all the time. I think she should see a Dr and see if it might be a possibility, or just to check her out. It finally passed about 3 days later, a cousin of ours had it for almost 3 months.
Kinda wonder about this. She is Osteo Arthritis but shows signs of RA, however every time she is tested the RA comes back negative. Doesn't help that she has been a sun worshiper her whole life and is really having a fight with staying out of it now.
