Here in Oregon we have a lot of hazelnut (filbert) trees . I can't find any information regarding a btu rating for this kind of wood. Does anyone have some info on this? My sense is that it is a middle of the road wood-btu wise. It is not a slow grower, and it is not dense. However, I have no real data. any input?

Burn it and find out. Most nut trees are great firewood that I know of.

Here in Ohio we have black walnut and white aka butternut trees that I know of and have burned both. Good shoulder season wood, medium to lower Btu's according to charts. Lots of experience here so maybe someone can help you with that species. My guess is any kind of fruit or nut tree would be worth grabbing. Welcome Stuart and keep us posted on the hazelnut.

Generally speaking any tree that will grow a nut is most times excellent firewood.

As he said in the first post, it is a filbert tree. So I guess that would make sense...
