Is it practical to haul something like a small tractor, side by side or ATV in a dump trailer? If I could get double duty out of a pricey dump trailer, that would make it more palatable to buy one!
Of course you can. I see it done with skidsteers, mini excavators, tractors, etc. With HD ramps you could drive up into the trailer. Depending on the size of your side by side and/or tractor, just make sure it’s physically big enough of a footprint to accommodate them. Also make sure your tow vehicle is big enough to tow it.
A friend of mine hauls his skid loader all the time with his dump trailer. Also make sure the trailer breaks are working !
I have a 14k dump trailer with ramps.....works great for tractor and mine excavator. What are you going to pull the trailer with?
I have a 2008 Nissan Titan, 1/2 ton. Might change because I am still eyeballing 4wd 3/4 ton trucks, want one, got sticker shock, maybe can find used.
The Titans are rated to tow around 9,000-9,500 lbs I believe. You should be fine getting a 6x12-7x14 tandem axle i'd think, provided you aren't looking to haul 5 yards of dirt. For moving wood and smallish machines it would be fine. I looked at the diesel Titan when I got my Frontier, but it was around 50-55k i believe.
Just make sure it is heavy on the tongue and all should be well. I've seen a couple that were light on the tongue and let us just say it did not work well at all.
My brother hauls his Bobcat track loader in his his 14k dump trailer all the time. It is a tight fit, but legal on weight. He pulls it with a 3/4 ton diesel Chevy.
You certainly can. Now I just need some machinery to haul LOL All I’ve carted in mine is the atv and zero turn. You really should have D-rings installed,,,,,for legal reasons if no other. Some dumps have them. Mine doesn’t. Don’t really miss them much with an atv or zero turn. Ratchet straps work good enough for that. one nice thing about the dump. I can raise the bed to make it a straighter shot in. Like with the zero turn. It would bottom out at the top. Just raise the bed up a little and that problem goes away
my Diamond came with ramps, tarp and D rings in the bed already. hauls my skid steer just fine. back it in for balance.
No. To chain down your equipment. I’m not totally up on all the regs for trailering but they are specific. Anything with wheels or tracks must be secured to the trailer. Think it matters wether it’s rubber tires or tracks on how it’s secured. Wouldnt want your tractor to flip over the side Now just how much weight a specific d ring will handle bolted or welded to the inside of a dump body may be a concern. But I think keeping a load from shifting is the biggest hurdle and requires less force. Once it’s allowed to tip you’ll need more strength to keep it in. Or in other words a little preventative safety goes along way. laws and regs may be specific but most police seeing cargo strapped down won’t give it a second glance. They see it free floating and they’ll check you out closer.
I think they prefer to see chains. Straps over metal edges tend to fray and break. Had that happen hauling this small piece of machinery in my trailer. Also, over the couple hundred mile trek I had to stop to tighten the straps at every rest stop. After that, I picked up some 10’ Grade 70 chains and ratchet binders for about $275 that kept the tractor in place an never loosened for the next trip. Have the same d-rings welded to the inside of my trailer. This is the package I bought. 3/8" - 1/2" Transport Package - (4) Ratchet Binders - (4) 10' Foot Chains
