Harman Cellar Dwellars - Do you use Stove Temp or Room Temp for getting the heat upstairs?

    Hello

Using stove temperatuure now but want it more automatic, so I extended the room probe upstairs. The old sub woofer outlet had an extra slot so it seemed to work out well.

Just laying it on the floor behind the couch does not seem to be the best configuration.

The Harman DVD states the room probe should be 5 - 6 feet off the floor.
We upgraded from the old gray room probe to the new black room probe.

Any suggestions? What mode do you use?

Another try here with better results.

Moving the room probe up to the recommended height by looping it around the old oil T-Stat is much better and now serving a more useful purpose! LOL
This room probe is approx. 8 feet from the livingroom register and 7 feet from the Kitchen register where the Harman pumps the heat out! With approx 176.7 Deg F of heat blasting out the 2 registers this is good ole automatic Harman Heating! See pic!
Not too close and not too far!
After setting the Harman Temp dial to approx 73 an hour later the old oil T-Stat read 73 Deg F ! ! !
Have to try a few more settings but looking good now! :)

Ok, setting up Harmy1 to 70.o Deg F on the temp dial was too low and 72.5 was a tad to high because it is 74 Deg F in the Livingroom now being 21.0 Deg F outside.

I just turned Harmy1 down a tad in between 70 and 72.5 so I am hoping the sweet spot is 71.25 Deg F on the Temp Dial with the outside temp 20.8 Deg F now and maybe it will regulate when the temp outside drops further. We will see!

    Don-

I heat both floors with my P61. For normal winter weather, I use the room sensing probe, set to a bit warmer than I like...around 72. For those really cold days (say, negative numbers), I use Stove mode.......qorks good for me...the stove mode gives consistent heat, where room temp wont.....it'll be up and down......

Thanks for your comments LW. I was using stove Temp but then when the temps drop early in the AM, the house was a tad cooler than I would like when I got up.
Tonight I am trying Room Temp with the room probe upstairs, the basement is 80 deg now and the upstairs is 73. The outside temp just dropped to 18 from 20.
The stove ramped down but I am hoping it will ramp up to keep the house at a stable temp for the night as outside temps tumble. We will see, if not I may have to go back to your way! :)

Running stove temp auto once we hit 24/7 burning. But I have had the same idea as Don on running the temp sensor up into the living room for the shoulder seasons. Pretty much the same theory as those that use wireless stats upstairs...except not wireless ;)

    2 words........

    Pellet Furnace ;)

Don, does that Infrared read 176°? That's pretty hot for a metal surface touching a combustible? No?

Yes, Pellet furnace for when it is really cold is the best way to go!

I checked it again and it read 150 so 176 is really too high!

I like that multi readout thermometer too! :)

It's nice to know the temp in the kids rooms.

Highest recorded temp for my resisters is 135° and that's during an auto clean on my Fahrenheit (highest level for 30 min). But with a bigger distribution blower and more CFM, comes lower temps.

    Hi Dexter
130-135 is really what it should be, that is what most HVAC systems are.
Mine is reading about 140 right now.

    Update:
The room probe upstairs worked well last night keeping the living room a much more constant temperature as the fire ramped up and down.
Not a pellet stove furnace but maybe the next best choice for a smaller home.

The temp dial setting of 72.5 Deg gave the livingroom a constant 73 Deg temp on the old oil T-Stat
That was a tad too hot so I turned the dial down to 71.25 again and got 71 to 72 Degs F in the livingroom as the basement temp near the stove is 78 Deg F

For this smaller house, it works well and nice to have a stove in the basement to enjoy.

I do recomment this setup with registers so the stove can sense the temp and adjust properly so it will not be ramped up and blasting away all the time.

I went thru about a bag of pellets last night being in the hi teens. My wife was cold so she turned the stove up to 72.5 Deg from where I had it set to 71.25 Deg while I was asleep. Then I woke up too hot so I turned it back down to 71.25 Degs at 5 am! Now I have to test it all over again tonight at stove setting 71.25 Degs! LOL

    Update: 2

The basement temp has dropped to 74 Degs F.
It is now 3:00 PM and the temp has changed outside from 18 Degs to 31 Degs F and snowing but the temp in the livingroom is still dead nuts at 72 Degs F. since I changed the setting at 5 AM Luv this Harmy1 ! ! !

The only variable here now is how fast I run the ductwork fan and the Harman room blower.
The ductwork fan, there is one for is full throttle all the time and the Harman room blower is dead nuts in the middle between L and H. So there you have it, I recommend giving it a try. Leave the stove and pellet mess in the cellar and keep the upstairs constant!

    Final Analysis
    After a few days
The Outside temps varied from 10 Deg to 32 Deg F
The basement temp near the Harman P61a varied from 74 Deg to 82 Deg F
But the Kitchen and Livingroom where the room probe is plugged in and hung at 5 feet above the floor
was 72 and only dropped to 71 Deg F at night. Within 1 Deg per Haram specs!

The bedrooms down the hall remained at a comfortable 68 Deg all day and night!
