... done this 11 years ago Decided to change out our smoke detectors that are hardwired with battery backup. On the back of them they say "Replace by 2003" I do know that they were working properly because I could hear them whenever my wife would be cooking! I feel better though. Gary

WOW! Ours that were from 1998, there were several, set off all in the entire whole house if even one battery became low, which was every other year despite replacing them!! Glad they were still functional but wondering about the difference? We used to have long power outages, did you?
Mine are disconnected as they randomly go off for no reason. They wouldn't wake me up at night if I'm sleeping anyhow.
Same thing just happened to me. I think I have Kidde, they are also hardwired. 2 of the 4 in the string have had a weird chirp noise. When I took it down and handed it to my wife, the back had a label describing what the chirps meant. Of course their was a date on it and the chirp was telling us the life of the detector had gone beyond it's date. damm, the hard wired ones are expensive too.
49.00 for a 4pack at Menards. Lowes should be about the same. Their are called a contracters pack all 4 in one box. Couldn't beat the price I thought they were going to be a lot more. Gary
The placement of the alarm is important. Those that go off together should have one of them where you are do you will hear them and wake you up. The carbon monoxide alarm should be were you are for the same reason. Carbon monoxide doesn't seek out a level. It disperses into the volume of available space. I buy the ones that you can't relace the battery. It goes the life of the detector, and no one can't take the battery and use it for something else. Ther are units designed for use in a kitchen to avoid false alarms while cooking.
I think code here now is one in every sleeping area and also towards the top of some ceiling areas. When we built our house we were okay with one in the hallway outside of the master bedroom, one in the basement, one upstairs between the 2 bedrooms and one in the room above the garage. I know the codes for new construction has changed since then. Gary
