NH: Dog Fights off Coyote that Attacks Mistress

    Mac, Coyote Fighter

The first coyote was recorded in New Hampshire in 1972. By 1980, they were found across the state. Eastern coyotes have wolf genes, and are larger than the western variety, reaching as much as 60 lbs.

The first coyote attack on a human in New Hampshire occurred in 2012. Ironically, the boy's dog ran off, leaving him to fight the coyote. From inquisiter.com:
The boy’s dog ran away when the coyote approached which left the boy to fend off the coyote’s attack on his own. After repeatedly punching the coyote in the nose, the coyote eventually ran off leaving the boy scratched and potentially bitten. As a precautionary measure, the teen is undergoing a course of rabies shots intended to thwart the deadly viral infection. The second coyote attack occurred just a couple of days ago, near Greenland, NH. In this case the woman's dog was an able defender, and gunshots failed to drive off the animal. From wmur.com:
The woman involved in the Monday morning attack didn't want to be identified. Her 4-year-old dog, Mac, has too many wounds to count and is wearing a pain patch on his hind leg but was credited with fighting off the coyote.
The woman and her dog were attacked while they were walking in a field on her property. Her husband heard her screams and drove his truck to separate them from the wild animal.
"He fired off a couple of shots," said Police Chief Tara Laurent. "Not at the coyote, because it was near his wife, but he shot off a couple of rounds thinking it would scare the animal off, which is usually the case. And it didn't seem to faze the coyote in this particular case. The attack occurred in a rural area of fields and forest. No mention is made of the make, model, or caliber of the firearm used.

The man and wife are undergoing rabies shots as a precautionary measure. Their dog, Mac the Coyote Fighter, is recovering.

That's up in antigun land, I wouldn't be surprised if there are charges against the husband. I hope not, but, in this day and age.....

Happens at my house all too often, at least four times this year, not me but the dogs. Luckily only once did one dog need vet attention. Never seen one close to 60 lbs :jaw: but I don't always see them. Luckily they do seem to be afraid of me and run off if I yell. No deer hunting on the island I live on, lots of deer and Yotes.

They get to that size and more around here but so far have not been a problem. There are 3 or 4 groups of hunters that come out after fresh snowfall to look for tracks then if they find some, the let the dogs out. They usually get several but I don't think it hardly makes a dent in the clan. We get pictures of yotes on trail cam and once this summer there were 5 in the same picture. Looks like they were just playing near the camera as we got many videos of them.

One funny part but sad too. When the coyote hunters began several years ago it just sort of ticked me off. Not that they were hunting but that they assumed they could just go wherever they wanted. I made it known we would prosecute trespassers. So the main guy of the group came to talk one day. He did promise to keep hunters off our land but, of course, it is difficult to tell the dogs that. No problem.

It is possible that group and the others may have gained access here but they will not now nor will they ever get it. If they had only asked first...

I know how you feel Dennis. At our farm, it was common to see heater hunters cruising down our very remote dirt road during hunting season. I hunted. If a hunter came and asked permission to hunt, I'd always say yes and ask them to head in a certain direction away from the farm. All was fine for about 10 years. Then, one year, a whole herd of heater boys bailed out just below our barn and walked down our fields after a buck. I didn't know any of them... out of staters. Next year... 1500' of road frontage was posted every 50 feet. I still let locals hunt, who would ask first tho.

My Grandpa would set in his chair and see hunters going across his field and say " Oh, somebody is hunting" and go back to watching TV.
But if anybody would come to the door to ask he wouldn't give them permission! Then he would say "If they have to ask they probably know what kind of hunter they are!"
